A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Chronosphere freezes everyone

Faceless Void's ultimate, Chronosphere (“chrono” for short), creates a dome in which time stops. Every unit in the radius is frozen except Void himself and units he controls: enemies, allied heroes, buildings and even wards.

Hence the classic situation: Void traps his own teammates in the chrono. Allies inside the dome stand just as still as the enemies and can't hit the frozen target the chrono was cast for.

The Dota 2 Wiki puts it plainly: the chrono “freezes all units which are not owned by Faceless Void, including buildings, wards, and allies.” Liquipedia describes the same mechanic more briefly: “Trap all units caught within the radius.”

The number one mistake at every rank

One English-language hero guide flatly calls this “the number one Void mistake at every rank” and advise placing the chrono at an edge so allies stay outside. The typical case is a dome that catches an allied Crystal Maiden's ultimate or a Witch Doctor's Death Ward: the ally freezes, and their strongest spell goes to waste.

On the Steam forums, complaints about Voids wasting their chrono on their own team go back to at least 2013. A 2020 thread discusses a Void “wasting Chronosphere on their own team,” and in 2024 one player put the rule in a nutshell: “Don't chrono death ward, don't chrono cm ult.”

A line with no single author

The line “Void, who did you just chrono?” is a working name for the joke, not a documented quote: it doesn't appear in this form in the sources, and it can't be tied to a specific match, stream or tournament. Nor are there any confirmed pro-match cases that could count as its source.

How common the mistake is, though, is confirmed by guides and Steam forum threads from 2013 to 2024. In the Russian phrasing, the verb literally means “to lock in,” player slang for catching someone in the chrono.

Time Zone: a chrono that helps allies

Patch 7.36, released on May 23, 2024, gave Faceless Void the Time Zone facet, a cube-shaped field inside which allies get a buff instead.

The classic chrono didn't go anywhere and remains the other option, so the old joke is still relevant.

Cybersport.ru described the change with the headline “No more golden domes”: instead of the familiar dome, Void got a square field. The new ultimate looks different, too, so the screen shows right away which version Void picked.

Faceless Void against the stars

The catalog picture is Faceless Void's hero art: a faceless purple warrior in armor holding a blade, with a starry sky behind him. It's hero art, not a shot of a botched chrono.

The character's facelessness suits the meme: there's no telling from his look whom he just trapped or whether he even knows.

Captions about chronoing your own team

These examples are made up for illustration: “Void, who did you just chrono? Everyone. I'm a team player,” “Crystal Maiden, frozen in the chrono along with the entire enemy team,” “When you help a friend move and lock him in the elevator with the couch.”

Captions usually play on one idea: an attempt to help that turns into a trap for your own side. The first example adds an excuse from Void himself, who is sure he did everything right.
