Newbee and The International 2014
xiao8 is the handle of Chinese player Zhang Ning (张宁). In July 2014, his Newbee — xiao8, Mu, Hao, Banana, and SanSheng, coached by Mikasa — won The International 2014. In the grand final they beat Vici Gaming 3–1 and took home $5,028,308.
Wikipedia names xiao8 as the captain of that Newbee roster, and Liquipedia lists “八王” and “The Director” among his nicknames. According to Liquipedia, the team nearly went out in the group stage at TI4. Vici Gaming earned $1,475,699 for second place, and Lowyat noted that three Chinese teams finished in the top four.
According to Liquipedia, before Newbee xiao8 played for Dream, Catastrophic Cruel Memories, Invictus Gaming and LGD Gaming. He started out in the offlane, then played mid and later moved to support. He joined Newbee together with Hao.
Three versions of where the nickname came from
Sources explain the nickname differently. Cyber.Sports.ru writes that xiao8 was called “the director” for complex but effective strategies that only he understood. Cybersport.ru derives it from the English word director in the film sense: his teams played so smoothly it was as if he'd written the script in advance.
The third version comes from Respawn Media's list of the nine best TI memes. It places the meme at TI4 and frames it ironically: people started calling xiao8 “the director” right after that tournament. None of the sources say who coined the nickname.
The first two versions treat the nickname as praise, the third as mockery.
“Ravage into the ground” and the ironic side
The ironic version rests on the fact that people laughed at xiao8 for mechanically odd plays. Respawn Media gives an example — a “Ravage into the ground,” a Tidehunter ultimate that hit no one — and puts the community's question this way: “How can a guy who presses Ravage into the ground become champion of the year's biggest tournament?”
Respawn treats the question as rhetorical and answers it right away: winning took leadership and an understanding of a meta in which faster meant better.
“Director 8” after TI4
According to Liquipedia, on July 29, 2014, xiao8 announced on Weibo that he would stop being a pro player “at least for the time being”; he later returned to competition. After that he worked as a coach: EHOME, then PSG.LGD, with whom, per Liquipedia, he won the Animajor 2021 and reached The International 2021 grand final, and later Xtreme Gaming. Liquipedia puts his total prize winnings at about $1.89 million. Russian-speaking fans still call him “The Director.”
The form “Director 8” appears in a Respawn Media headline, combining the Russian nickname with the number from his handle. Today it's a respectful, tongue-in-cheek label for a strategist captain whose decisions look baffling from the outside but lead to wins.

Captions about a strange plan that works
People use the nickname when someone's plan looks strange but works. These examples are made up for illustration:
“Drafted five supports and won. Director 8 approves.” “The team lead explained the strategy — nobody got it, and the release shipped on time. The Director.” “Ravage into the ground, Aegis in hand.”
