Na'Vi vs. Re-defining Madness: a pause mid-initiation
Clement “Puppey” Ivanov captained Na'Vi from 2011 to 2013 (he took over as captain after ArtStyle left in October 2011) and later became Team Secret's long-standing captain. In 2011 he won the first International with Na'Vi, and in 2022 he reached the TI grand final with Team Secret. According to GosuGamers, in early 2026, after more than 11 years with Team Secret, Puppey became PARIVISION's coach. The community attached his name to a special kind of pause — the one that comes at the worst possible moment for the opponent.
According to Dota 2 Wiki, it started in 2013 in a game between Na'Vi and Re-defining Madness: the match was paused exactly as RdM began their initiation. Dota 2 Wiki cites episode 6 of Merlini's Mailbag, dated March 20, 2013, as the source. The tournament and the exact date of the game itself haven't been established.
Technical pause or tactical trick
The joke lives on ambiguity. Officially, pro Dota 2 pauses are for technical reasons: a dropped connection, a frozen PC, a dead headset. But when one happens the second the enemy is running in for a gank with Blink Dagger and ultimates ready, it looks from the outside like a way to stop that gank.
Hawk Live describes Puppey Pause as the Team Secret captain's habit of pausing at key moments: officially for technical issues, while the community suspected tactics, either to break the enemy's momentum or to talk strategy. The sources disagree on timing: Dota 2 Wiki traces the meme to the Na'Vi era, while Hawk Live ties it to Team Secret, founded in 2014, and names no specific matches.
A Valve tweet at the Chongqing Major and merch
The meme outlived roster changes and patches. At the Chongqing Major in January 2019, Valve's Wykrhm tweeted: “Puppey calling Puppey Pause. The memes are real. #ChongqingMajor.”
Redbubble sells merch printed with “Puppey pause.” Today the phrase means any pause at the worst moment for the opponent, no matter who hits it.
Team Secret in a Chongqing Major booth
In the catalog, the meme is illustrated not with a game screenshot but with a photo: Team Secret players sitting at their computers in a player booth at the Chongqing Major. That's the same tournament Wykrhm's “Puppey Pause” tweet refers to.
Captions for a badly timed pause
People drop the phrase into stream chat when a game stops in the middle of a fight, and in everyday jokes about sudden breaks. These examples are made up for illustration:
“The enemy pops Black Hole — and then, Puppey Pause.” “My boss walked in a minute before the deadline. Classic Puppey Pause.” “Our captain's ping spiked right on our initiation. Coincidence?”
Officer Merlini and the fountain hook
The same RdM episode gave rise to a related meme, “Officer Merlini on the case”; Dota 2 Wiki also dates it to 2013. As the wiki describes it, people say it when caster Merlini finds something that shouldn't happen: suspicious tactical pauses, bugs and other problems.
Another Puppey story is the fountain hook in Na'Vi vs. TongFu at TI3: Puppey on Chen teleported Dendi back to base, and Dendi on Pudge hooked opponents straight into Na'Vi's fountain.
