The Hassan brothers on opposite sides

Syed Sumail “SumaiL” Hassan and Yawar “YawaR” Hassan are brothers and professional Dota 2 players. In 2021, SumaiL played for OG and YawaR for Quincy Crew, and their teams met more than once in elimination series. SumaiL is the younger of the two, hence the “lil bro” in the famous message.

The name “Hassanbowl” was first heard from the studio and casters at ESL One Summer 2021. Around June 18, 2021, OG beat Quincy Crew 2–0 in the lower bracket, and English-language outlets billed the match as “The Battle of the Brothers.” The name itself is modeled on American sports “bowls” such as the Super Bowl.

The matchup truly became a meme at The International 10. In the main event’s lower bracket, OG and Quincy Crew again played a best-of-three where the loser went home. Sources differ slightly on the date: English-language media say October 13, 2021, while in Asian time the series was scheduled for October 14.

OG won 2–0 again. Topson stood out in game one, finishing the map with a 20-4-13 KDA. That was the end of the tournament for Quincy Crew, while OG continued their run through the lower bracket. Later in the same tournament, OG were knocked out by Team Spirit, the series that gave the community the “ez game” meme.

“gg gl lil bro” in all chat

After Quincy Crew conceded, YawaR typed to his brother in chat: “gg gl lil bro” (“good game, good luck, little brother”). The phrase spread across social media, and esports.gg put it in the headline of its story on Quincy Crew's elimination. One English-language article attributes the message to “YS,” but the other sources name YawaR.

Esports.gg called the series the “HassanBowl” and the “Clash of the Brothers,” and “SumaiL vs YawaR” took sixth place on its list of the top 10 Dota 2 memes of 2021.

Since then, any head-to-head meeting between the brothers has been called a “Hassan Bowl,” and “gg gl lil bro” is cited as an example of a warm sportsmanlike gesture, especially next to the harsher trash talk the same tournament is remembered for.

Example captions and related memes

The meme fits any family or friendly competition where the loser still wishes the winner luck. These examples are made up for illustration: “Family dinner when my brother and I root for different teams — Hassan Bowl,” “Lost to my little brother at chess. gg gl lil bro,” “Hassan Bowl at the cabin: who finishes grilling first.”

For OG, the series against Quincy Crew was one of several at TI10. In 2021 meme roundups, Hassan Bowl sits next to Puppey's “Stay down” and TORONTOTOKYO's “ez game,” both of which were also aimed at OG.
