Dendi, Na’Vi and a 2014 interview

Danil “Dendi” Ishutin is Natus Vincere’s longtime mid player and a TI1 champion with that team. The Dota 2 Wiki credits him with the phrase “MMR is just a number.”

The origin of the phrase is less well documented than its popularity. This fan-run wiki specifies that Dendi coined it in an interview he gave in Malaysia in 2014, but a recording of that interview is hard to find, so it is more accurate to say the words are attributed to it. Later occasions when Dendi himself returned to the idea are known from a 2016 tweet and a 2017 interview.

What Dendi said about rating

MMR is the matchmaking rating. On January 27, 2017, in a piece titled “Dendi: most young guys think MMR matters,” Cybersport.ru summarized his view this way: many young players think MMR matters, but in team play it means little. The example given was OG, a successful team whose players did not stand out for record ratings.

NS made a similar point about Dendi himself. Explaining why Dendi intentionally doesn’t raise his MMR, Hawk.live quoted him: Dendi “could be the top 1 if he wanted to. But he doesn’t need it.”

DendiFace in chat and the 8k club

The community gave the phrase a second, sarcastic meaning. According to the Dota 2 Wiki, stream chats type it when a player with a notably high MMR escapes a gank or makes a skillful play, sometimes along with DendiFace emotes. The line about rating not mattering comes up exactly when the rating seems to be proving itself.

Dendi played along himself. A tweet attributed to his account, dated by its status ID to November 2016, reads: “MMR is just a number. Dondo joined the 8 k club,” a joke about reaching 8,000 MMR himself. Cybersport.ru also covered the milestone.

“Dendi is just a MMR” and other flips

Today the meme is used to wave off rating ironically or to needle rating-focused players who are proud of the number on their profile.

The meme also has a flipped version: Dotabuff discussions from 2017 include “Dendi is just a MMR,” with the name and the abbreviation swapped. A Dotabuff thread from August 13, 2017, even disputes the phrase in its title: “MMR isn’t just a number.”

Dendi’s photo from The International 2014

The catalog card uses a photo from The International 2014: a smiling Dendi in a Na’Vi hoodie giving a thumbs-up. It is not a frame from that interview but a picture from the same year in which, according to the fan wiki, the phrase was first said.

Captions about rating and failure

These examples are made up for illustration: “Lost ten games in a row, but MMR is just a number,” “When your teammate has 7,000 MMR and spends the laning stage hugging his tower: it’s just a number, right?”, “Calibrated at 2,000. Dendi would understand,” “A high-MMR mid escaped a gank on a sliver of health. Sure, MMR is just a number.”

Captions like these set the number on a profile against what happens in the game, whether a blunder or a great play, and the quote turns that contrast into a joke.
