Streamer Stariy_bog and his fans on Team Spirit
Stariy_bog is the handle of a Ukrainian Dota 2 Twitch streamer. He's known for spamming Io (Wisp) and Tinker in mid; according to Respawn and Cyber.Sports.ru, his rating is about 11,000 MMR. According to Respawn, after a win or a good play he flexes his bicep at the camera and says his own handle.
Team Spirit players watched his streams. Captain Yaroslav “Miposhka” Naidenov told the streamer himself that roughly half the bootcamp were his fans, and the phrase “Old God” came up often in Spirit's YouTube vlogs, after which viewers started typing it in chat.
PGL Wallachia: Larl's bicep after the final
PGL Wallachia Season 1 is named as the starting point. In the May 19, 2024, final, Team Spirit beat Xtreme Gaming 3–2. After the match, host Banks asked midlaner Denis “Larl” Sigitov what he wanted to say to the fans.
Larl flexed his bicep and said only: “Old God.” The bicep flex is the streamer's own signature gesture. Respawn describes it as a post-match interview, Cyber.Sports.ru as a reply to the host at the final.
According to Respawn, Spirit players had said the phrase repeatedly during the tournament itself, Russian-language casters brought it up from time to time, and viewers spammed it in chat after every team win. The streamer himself wrote on Telegram that he was a little shocked. Respawn's piece on it came out on May 21, 2024.
A chain of repeats: from Dota 2 to CS2
After Wallachia, other players picked up the phrase. According to Cyber.Sports.ru, RAMZES, Pasha and Pure repeated the bicep flex during The International qualifiers, and donk from Spirit's CS2 roster posted “Старый бог 💪 💪” (“Old God 💪 💪”) on his Telegram channel after winning the BLAST Spring Final.
That's how a streamer's handle moved beyond one team and one game. In text, the phrase usually comes with the 💪 emoji. According to Cyber.Sports.ru, people also use it jokingly for any small win, from a frag in a pub game to taking out the trash, flexing a bicep as they say it.
The chat wheel at The International 2024
By The International 2024, the phrase was in the game itself. “Old God” joined the chat wheel as an exclusive item in Team Spirit's gold support bundle, as Cyber.Sports.ru reported on August 28, 2024. According to the outlet, the bundle cost 645 rubles and is no longer on sale; Hawk Live puts the price at about $7, noting that it varies by region. According to Hawk Live, the bundle also included a loading screen featuring Ilya “Yatoro” Mulyarchuk and a unique badge, and half the revenue went to Team Spirit.
Sources call the item a chat-wheel “phrase” or “line”; whether it's voiced, and by whom, isn't specified. Cybersport.ru included the meme in its poll for the top Dota meme of 2024.
