Rearm and endless spell spam

Tinker's key ability is his ultimate, Rearm, which refreshes his abilities and items. The hero can cast nukes again and again. In January 2023, Dotesports called Tinker one of the hardest and strongest late-game heroes: spamming after Rearm takes “FPS-levels of reaction time.”

To the opponent, it looks like a hero who never runs out of abilities: after Rearm, Tinker again has access to the spells and items he has just used. That is where his reputation comes from.

Invoker also made that same January Dotesports list of the hardest heroes. For Tinker, difficulty and power go together: the faster the player casts everything after Rearm, the more dangerous the hero is for the opponent.

The most annoying hero

Sportskeeda ranks Tinker third on its list of the five most annoying Dota 2 heroes. It lists the reasons too: early Boots of Travel and Blink, constant lane pushing, how very hard he is to play against without Black King Bar, and his role as the best high-ground sieger.

In June 2019, RuHub analyst Yaroslav “NS” Kuznetsov said, as cybersport.ru reported: “The meta in which Tinker is popular is one of my most hated.” In his words, playing against Tinker in pubs “hurts,” and without counterpicks he is almost impossible to beat.

Patch 7.30: Tinker becomes a support

In August 2021, patch 7.30 heavily reworked the hero. Tinker got Defense Matrix and Keen Conveyance, a teleport to allies, and mandatory Boots of Travel stopped being part of his build.

As ONE Esports reported, after the rework Tinker became viable as a support too, a notable change for a hero known as the ultimate pusher.

Among the annoyances Sportskeeda listed were early Boots of Travel. After 7.30 they stopped being a mandatory part of the build, and Tinker can now move to his allies with his own ability, Keen Conveyance.

7.39d and calls to bring back the old Tinker

In 2025, players on Reddit asked Valve to “revert this hero,” bringing back Boots of Travel and removing Defense Matrix. In patch 7.39d, Valve buffed Keen Conveyance: with Rearm, its cooldown dropped from 80 to 50 seconds. The patch number is muddled: the hawk.live headline says 7.39c, while the article text says 7.39d.

Some players took the change as trolling on Valve's part; among those who poked fun at the buff was Arteezy, as hawk.live reported.

That gave the meme a second side: players who used to complain about Tinker the pusher were, after the 7.30 rework, asking to give him back Boots of Travel and remove Defense Matrix.

Underwater Tinker in the picture and example captions

The catalog image is Tinker's hero art in an underwater set: several glowing mechanical capsule robots under water.

These examples were made up for illustration: “Tinker in their draft: my lanes aren't mine anymore,” “Hit Rearm and here we go again,” “When you see Tinker in the enemy draft and quietly open a counterpick tab.”

The captions usually play on the same things Sportskeeda and NS complained about: endless Rearm, constant lane pushing and the hunt for counterpicks, without which, in the analyst's words, Tinker is almost impossible to beat.
