A two-headed ogre favored by luck

In Dota 2 lore, ogres are not the brightest creatures and survive thanks to Dumb Luck, a knack for random good fortune. Out of pity for this hapless species, the Goddess of Luck took the Ogre Magi under her wing.

Two-headed ogres are born roughly once a generation and are named Aggron Stonebreak, after the first and possibly only wise ogre. That is the Ogre Magi's name. Liquipedia sums it up: he has a very potent form of Dumb Luck, and it's called Multicast.

Multicast: x2, x3, x4

Multicast is a passive chance to repeat a spell two, three or four times. Each level, as Liquipedia describes, comes with its own rising-pitch sound, so an x4 is instantly audible. The ability's flavor text reads: “Once is not enough. It's just as high as we can count.”

Since patch 7.33 (April 2023), Ogre Magi has been a strength hero with zero intelligence, so intelligence items do nothing for him. Later the hero gained the innate ability Dumb Luck, which ties his Multicast chance to strength.

Voice lines that laugh at themselves

The hero's lines constantly poke fun at his stupidity. In the Russian voiceover, Ogre says things like “Looks like I got smarter! Hmm, not one bit!”, “Once wouldn't be enough! But we can't count anyway!” and “Luck has nothing to do with it!” When he meets Invoker, he gloats: “Ha-ha! We're smarter!”

The line “Once wouldn't be enough! But we can't count anyway!” echoes Multicast's English flavor text about not being able to count any higher. The lines about Ogre getting “smarter, not one bit” and luck having “nothing to do with it” repeat the same lore joke: the hero has luck to spare and no brains at all.

Luck instead of skill

In the community, Ogre has a reputation as the luckiest and dumbest hero in Dota 2. An x4 Multicast on Fireblast, Bloodlust or an item like Hex becomes the punchline of jokes about luck over skill: the opponent seemingly lost not to a player but to a random number generator.

Esports.net links Ogre's playstyle to the chat joke “SMOrc ME HIT,” about mindless aggression. No dated viral moments that could be called the meme's source turned up in the sources checked. The joke rests on the hero's lore, voice lines and design: luck is built into his mechanics, and since patch 7.33 his intelligence has been zero.

Two heads in the picture

In the catalog the meme is illustrated with Ogre Magi's hero art: a blue two-headed ogre in a red cloak, both heads baring their teeth.

The two grinning heads suit captions about luck and stupidity. There's no Multicast moment in the picture; it works through the image of the hero himself.

Captions about effortless luck

These examples are made up for illustration: “Passed the exam without opening the textbook: luck has nothing to do with it,” “x4 Multicast on Hex, and I wasn't even aiming,” “One head studied for the exam, the other prayed to the Goddess of Luck.”

The jokes usually revolve around two themes: an effortless lucky win, and the hero's two heads, which seem to share a single stroke of luck between them.
