What is shown

The picture shows a simple stick figure with a round head and a minimal face: two dots and a straight line for a mouth. He's wearing a small jetpack that shoots out flame, and he shoots up and away along a diagonal, leaving behind a cloud of smoke and a dotted trail of gray puffs that emphasizes the motion.

On the right, large black letters spell out "NOTHING TO DO HERE." That caption is enough to get the point: the character is fleeing because there's nothing for him to do in this place.

Origin

The character appeared in April 2011 on the Spanish site Cuánto Cabrón, which published rage comics. As far as can be determined, the first comic featuring him came out on April 21, 2011. The author was a registered user of the site, but beyond the pseudonym, their identity hasn't been established.

The plot of the first comic is simple: a man, on hearing a woman mention that she has a boyfriend, silently takes off on a jetpack and leaves the scene. That scene set the logic for all the later variations, in which the character flees any awkward situation.

In May 2011 the comic was translated into English and posted on 9gag, after which the meme quickly spread across the English-speaking internet. The first known post on Reddit, in the f7u12 community, came in October 2011 and reached the front page of the section. Derivatives soon appeared on deviantArt, Tumblr, and FunnyJunk, and by spring 2012 meme generators had collected more than two and a half hundred works featuring the character.

How it's used

The meme's main purpose is to flag a boring post, thread, or situation. A user posts the picture of the flying figure with the caption "Nothing to do here," and it becomes clear: there's nothing to discuss, and the poster has already left.

The format also gets applied to awkward moments: a failed flirtation, an awkward pause in conversation, an attempt to talk to a stranger. The character with the jetpack would rather fly off than see things through, and the caption turns the escape into a comic punchline.

The meme often shows up as a response to pointless comment threads or empty posts. In that case it works as an ironic "well, I'm out," accompanying an exit from the discussion without extra drama. Other "escape" characters from the same circle of comics serve a similar function.

Why the meme works

The humor rests on an absurd exit. Instead of dealing with an awkward moment, the character literally flies off on a jetpack, and that overreaction is what's funny. The deliberately calm caption "nothing to do here" presents the escape as routine, and the contrast between the scale of the action and the casual tone is what gets the laugh.

The simplicity of the drawing also plays a role. A plain, detail-free character transfers easily to any situation, and the flame and smoke cloud convey motion without extra words. The meme is understandable without context, which is why it remains a convenient tool for online communication.

The joke itself isn't spelled out literally, and its meaning is reconstructed from typical examples of use. That's exactly why the format stays flexible and accepts all kinds of captions while keeping the same underlying logic of leaving.
