What's shown in the picture

The drawing shows a round face with no body, with a short line for a neck. The eyebrows are drawn together toward the bridge of the nose and lowered over the eyes, the eyelids are half-closed, and the lips are pressed into a thin line with the corners turned down. The expression can be read as distrust, skepticism, or angry exhaustion, and it's exactly this combination that gives it its power: it's not open rage, but a restrained "are you serious?"

The drawing is done in a simple black-and-white comic style, with a minimum of detail. This simplicity makes it easy to copy and rework: the face can easily be cut out, redrawn, or placed into any frame without losing recognizability. That's why the picture quickly became a standalone element used without any storyline at all.

Origin: Rage comics

The character belongs to the Rage Comics series, which was built on simple drawn faces and short four-panel comics. The series traces back to English-language imageboards, primarily 4chan, and quickly moved onto entertainment sites and social networks. Most such characters were created anonymously, and the authorship of individual faces often remains unknown.

The earliest known instance of this face appeared on the site FunnyJunk on May 23, 2010. The next day, user FunnyJunkBrah posted a blank four-panel template with this expression, and over the last week of May almost 300 derivative comics appeared on the same site. That's how the face turned from a single drawing into a whole format in which anyone could come up with their own situation.

Spread

On June 16, 2010, DeviantArt user CruiserPL posted a transparent drawing of the face, and on June 19 posted a version captioned "Are You Fucking Kidding Me?" This version quickly spread across Reddit, Tumblr, and meme sites, where dozens of its own variants appeared. The captions and wording changed, but the expression itself stayed recognizable.

In Russian-speaking circles the phrase is usually rendered as "Ты надо мной смеёшься?" ("Are you laughing at me?"). The translation conveys the general meaning well: the character is reacting not to a threat but to absurdity, which is why the face proved convenient for discussions where people need to express bewilderment without extra aggression. Over time it was largely replaced by the later "Are you serious" image, but AYFKM remains one of the most recognizable rage faces.

Typical use

The face is used in response to someone else's stupidity: an absurd announcement, strange advice, an obvious blunder, or a pointless argument. In meaning it's close to the "ಠ_ಠ" emoji and the phrase "X is not amused," but emotionally broader. It's more irritation and bewilderment than condemnation, which makes it easy to use in a joking tone.

The picture is most often placed in four-panel comics: the first three panels show an absurd situation, and the last shows the character's reaction. This device makes the meme self-sufficient: the viewer gets the meaning without a caption, which is exactly why the format stayed popular among rage comic fans for so long.

Why the face works as a joke

The main reason for its popularity is versatility. One emotion covers dozens of situations, from comment-section arguments to everyday conversations. The face isn't tied to a specific event, so it can be used again and again, and each time it sounds fresh.

Besides, the meme is funny because of the contrast between the simplicity of the drawing and the precision of the expression. Drawn at a minimal level, the face conveys a complex mix of skepticism and exhaustion, and the viewer recognizes their own reaction in it. That's what makes AYFKM a convenient line for online communication, where one needs to quickly show that the stupidity has been noticed.
