Everything Went Better Than Expected

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Everything Went Better Than Expected

What this meme means

Everything Went Better Than Expected is a pleased, slightly smug smile for the moment when a result exceeds expectations. The character fits both an ordinary success and a pleasant turn after worry; the judgment depends on what the hero expected.

A Rage Comics reaction

The picture shows a simple drawn face with a wide but calm smile and the red caption EVERYTHING WENT BETTER THAN EXPECTED. This is a reaction character from the Rage Comics era: schematic faces helped quickly show a change of mood in a story without spending panels on detailed expressions. Here the smile is not an ecstatic shout. The hero seems pleased with himself or with the situation and, as if in his head, has already compared the outcome with the forecast.

Among the early traces of the character is a comic on the eBaum’s World forum dated November 27, 2008. In 2009 the face was discussed on other forums, and the caption lived on without the original story. This is one of the early dates, not a confirmed origin; the author of the drawing is unknown.

Better for whom?

The phrase compares an outcome with an expectation but does not say who is evaluating the result. One hero is glad because he prepared and everything went well; another is glad because misfortune struck a rival. In the early comic the face expressed the second kind: bad news for car makers turned into good news for a character who wanted to see them in trouble. So the reaction does not make the outcome objectively good; it shows the viewpoint of the person smiling.

In another story the same character can be happy without anyone losing. For example, a person expected a trip to take the whole day off but found a shorter route and got back in time for dinner. Or he feared failing an exam and received a grade higher than he had hoped. This is an ordinary success, not a trick: the face only conveys that the result turned out nicer than the forecast.

A calm smile instead of jubilation

The expression sets a calm tone. The character does not jump or shout with joy; he smiles as if his rightness has been confirmed. That is why the caption can sound like sincere delight or like a smug comment. For instance, a roommate expected to ruin a cake himself but took it out of the oven exactly on time; the satisfied smile fits relief. If, however, he had been counting on someone else’s cake failing and it did, a sharper undertone appears.

The text itself does not say how big the success is. A well-finished complex task and a minor coincidence can provoke the same smile; the scale is set by the previous panel or the caption. In a short format it helps to understand where the expectation came from. Without it, the viewer sees a pleasant outcome but does not learn why the character considers it unexpectedly good.

One outcome, different reactions

Hypothetical variant: “Expected to get soaked to the bone on my run; the rain started only after I got back.” The hero is glad that the outcome was better than his own forecast. Another example: “Expected to meet the strongest rival in the first round; the draw sent him to a different bracket.” The participant’s path became easier before the game even started: his contentment comes not from a victory but from an unexpected change in the tournament picture.

Imagine a made-up mini-comic: in the first panel two people expect a trip to be canceled because of a strike. The train does arrive, but packed; one passenger is irritated because he will be late for a meeting, while the other is pleased because he will get home before the rain. The smile fits the second, though the event is the same. Thus adjacent panels can show not only a change in circumstances but also the difference between who is evaluating the result. The face itself stays calm: it records a private stroke of luck rather than delivering a general verdict on what is happening.
