“?” in all chat: Dota 2's one-character diss

What this meme means

A lone “?” in all chat mocks an opponent's mistake. One story traces it to ppd at DAC 2015; the most famous case is Emo's “?” at Singapore Major 2021.

The ppd story and the DAC 2015 final

According to Hawk Live, the meme started in the grand final of the Dota 2 Asia Championships 2015, where Evil Geniuses met Vici Gaming. After a successful base defense, Peter “ppd” Dager typed a single “?” in all chat.

The final itself is well documented: DAC 2015 ran from January 5 to February 9, 2015, and EG beat Vici, 3–0 according to GodisaGeek. The “?” moment, however, is described only by Hawk Live, and there's no consensus on where the trend began.

Win.gg states plainly that the exact start of the trend is unclear. So 2015 is the earliest known version, not an established date.

“dont question mark lol”: EG vs. TNC

Dota 2 Wiki records another related meme from 2016. In a game between EG and TNC, ppd paused because of mic problems, Demon typed “?” in chat, and ppd replied, “dont question mark lol.”

Dota 2 Wiki says the line comes up whenever someone replies with a question mark. The same page notes that since 2017, The International Battle Pass has offered a “?” deny icon in place of the usual “!” as a level reward.

Emo and iG's reverse sweep at the 2021 Singapore Major

The most famous case came in the grand final of the ONE Esports Singapore Major 2021, on April 4, 2021. According to GosuGamers, EG had dropped only one game all tournament before the final. Invictus Gaming was down 0–2, and in game three, as GosuGamers, sports.ru and esports.gg describe it, Zhou “Emo” Yi, who had died seven times by then, killed four EG heroes on their own high ground and typed “?” in all chat.

Sources describe the details differently. Esports.net says Emo killed Arteezy, who had chased him, and typed “?” before EG called GG, which would put it closer to the end of the game; Sportskeeda places the “?” in the deciding match, and outlets name different players as its target. The outcome is undisputed: iG completed the reverse sweep and won 3–2, and in game five Emo added, “Let's see who is real evil genius.”

The reaction was huge. Analyst Noxville called for iG to be fined, and according to TeaGuvnor, the number of “?” per minute in Twitch chat set a record for Dota 2. According to GosuGamers, iG took home $200,000 and 500 DPC points, its first Valve major title since TI2.

“?” from the pro scene to pubs

As Hotspawn notes, the meme thrives equally in pro matches and in pubs at every rank. Players use it in response to an opponent's blunder: a failed dive, a lost trade, a silly death. Dota 2 Wiki calls “?” the most tilting thing to type in all chat after an enemy misplay.

There's an official parallel too: according to Dota 2 Wiki, when the system date is April 1, every “!” deny icon turns into a “?”.

A facepalm at the Singapore Major

The catalog card shows a black-and-white photo of a player covering his face with his hand. It was taken at the 2021 Singapore Major, where EG lost to iG.
