Source of the quote
The phrase “а бошки дымятся, подружки скучают” (“and the heads are smoking, the girlfriends are missing out”) comes from a song by Eldzhey, one of the most prominent Russian-language rap performers of the second half of the 2010s, whose tracks regularly supplied quotes for social media. The line evokes the atmosphere typical of his lyrics: a group smoking, a relaxed mood, and those who are absent and “missing out.” Thanks to its rhythm and recognizable vocabulary, the phrase quickly detached from the original track and took on a life of its own as a picture caption.
After the track came out, the meme spread online. It was most often used literally: the line was captioned on photos and videos of people with smoking joints, playing on the direct meaning of “bashki” (heads; in slang, also a portion of cannabis).
How the phrase became a template for pictures about smoking
The meme format is typical of rap quotes: the line works as a universal caption that can be attached to any frame with people smoking, whether cigarettes, hookah or marijuana. The irony comes from the contrast between the almost lyrical intonation of the phrase and the everyday, often comic picture it is attached to.
Over time the format widened. The caption began to be used even for frames where nobody is smoking but the situation looks “foggy” or absurd. A feeling of a relaxed, slightly detached mood was enough.
The second wave of popularity in 2025
Several years after the first surge, the meme unexpectedly picked up steam again. The trigger was a short TikTok video in which a girl in glasses opens her mouth as wide as possible, head tilted back, in a close-up. The author and the exact context of the original clip are unknown: the video spread across social media without stable attribution, which is typical of viral short videos that get copied and reposted faster than their origin can be traced.
Users began captioning this frame with the “bashki” line, even though the video itself has no direct connection to smoking. What worked was the effect of an unexpected, almost grotesque facial expression, which reads well as a “jaw-dropped” or “blown away” reaction. The text quote thus came loose from its original literal meaning and became a universal marker of an expressive, slightly crazed reaction.
Formats in use
Today the meme exists in at least two parallel versions: the classic one, a caption on photos and videos of people smoking in company, and a newer one, a caption on the TikTok frame with a wide-open mouth. Both share the same logic. The line does not literally describe what is happening but serves as an emotional comment on a state of being “high,” whatever the cause.
Hybrid versions also appear: collages that combine the classic smoke photo with a screenshot of the girl with her mouth open, as if illustrating the “effect” of smoking through an exaggerated reaction.
Typical captions
Users usually do not change the line itself but add a situational comment: “heads are smoking, girlfriends are missing out” under a photo of a Friday night party captioned “as promised,” or the variant “heads are smoking, deadlines are burning” for jokes about procrastination that have nothing to do with actual smoking.
