Erzhan, Get Up

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Erzhan, Get Up

What this meme means

A clip with the line “Erzhan, get up, it's time for work” appeared online long before the meme: the date and place of the original recording are not reliably established, and versions differ. The meme itself, in which a man wakes a sleeping monkey, spread in 2016–2017 and came back into feeds in spring 2019.

What is visible in the frame

The frame is dark and blurred, apparently shot from a phone screen. Almost all of the space is taken by a sleeping animal with dark fur: its head is turned to the side, its eyes are closed, and its muzzle is pressed against a white pillow. On the left an edge of blue fabric is visible, resembling a sleeve or a blanket.

In the lower right corner the edge of another person's or animal's dark hair is visible. The frame contains no action: no waking, no words, no reaction. The viewer sees only sleep, and the line from the clip is not heard in the frame. That is why the picture works as a still from the middle of a story.

Where the clip came from

The origin of the original is hard to establish. According to available information, the video appeared in 2015–2016: a man tries to wake a sleeping monkey and warns that it will be late for work. There was a 2016 version with a different name, and the clip spread under the name Erzhan in 2017. It carried a mark from an Instagram account that is now unavailable.

The country of filming is also unconfirmed. The name Erzhan is common in Kazakhstan, but this is only a guess, and it does not prove where the video was shot. The authorship of the clip, the man's identity, and the animal's owner have not been reliably established.

The animal's species is described differently: more often simply 'monkey', sometimes 'chimpanzee'. Claims that the sound was dubbed over someone else's video and that the animal's real name is different have not been independently confirmed, and should be treated as speculation.

Why the line is funny

The humor rests on contrast. The phrase 'time for work' is the most ordinary everyday formula, one many people hear in the morning. Here it is addressed to a sleeping monkey, and the animal becomes an employee who does not want to get up. The human intonation and the everyday formula make the beast a participant in office routine.

The meme moved into sound jokes. The clip was re-voiced, cut into short fragments, and inserted into compilations of parodies. In spring 2019, reportedly, a version became popular in which Erzhan dreams he is King Kong. Such remixes gave the phrase the role of an alarm clock: it is placed wherever someone needs waking who is dragging their feet.

Caption examples for the frame

Below are examples built on the same frame. The caption does not explain the plot; it sets a situation in which a familiar phrase is recognized.

“Monday, seven in the morning, and I'm still asking for five more minutes.” The sleeping animal matches the request for extra minutes, and the familiar phrase becomes a continuation of that request.

“My weekend plan: first rest, then rest some more.” The sleeping body works as a ready-made metaphor for laziness, so the phrase about work is no longer needed: the viewer recalls it themselves.

“When the chat writes ‘good morning’ and you haven't woken up yet.” The example turns the message into a body: the text describes the morning, and the picture shows the reaction to it.

“The alarm is ringing again on Friday.” A short caption reads well because the familiar clip already adds meaning.

How to use this template

The white field at the top right leaves room for a short caption of one or two lines. It is better not to fill the entire top of the frame: the dark fur and the blur already create contrast, and large text would disrupt it.

The caption should be kept short so it does not argue with the recognizable phrase. The frame suits reactions to sleepiness, lateness, and morning messages. For stories that need to show action it is poorly suited, because there is no action in it.
