What is visible in the frame
The screenshot was taken from a video player window. At the top, three teenagers sit on a dark couch facing each other; two framed pictures hang on the wall behind them. On the left, a child in a blue sports T-shirt and black cap with lettering; in the middle, one in a gray T-shirt with hands folded on the knees; on the right, one in a red sweatshirt. Everyone's posture is tense and businesslike, as in a real interview.
At the bottom of the frame is the red playback bar, below it the title “Is Fortnite Actually Overrated?” and the counter “161 views.” These interface elements are exactly what turns the screenshot into a ready-made template: the caption is already written on the picture itself.
Where the video came from
Reportedly, the video was uploaded to YouTube on January 6, 2019, and attracted no attention for several months. It is an amateur recording in which the participants discuss how deserved the game Fortnite's popularity is. The participants' names and details of the video are not needed here: it was made by kids and for kids, and no one prepared to become part of a meme.
The screenshot became popular in August 2019. Reportedly, on August 11 it was posted to Tumblr, and the next day a version with a caption about ancient philosophers appeared, after which the image spread across Reddit, Facebook and Twitter. The period of mass distribution is thus separated from the filming date by several months.
How the joke works
The central device is the collision of a serious discussion with a subject that, from an adult's point of view, is trivial. The title sounds like the topic of a scientific debate, and the participants on the couch look like experts. When another topic is substituted for the game's name, for example yesterday's reheated pizza or Mondays, the format turns any trifle into the subject of a philosophical dispute.
A separate comic layer comes from the numbers. The counter “161 views” emphasizes that such discussions exist outside big stages, which means the template is good for describing discussions “in a narrow circle.”
Caption examples
“Is Mondays Actually Overrated?” — a caption with the topic replaced. The example works because Mondays cannot be overrated, and the question turns into absurdity.
“Is Sleep Actually Necessary?” — a sleepy version of the format. The seriousness on the faces makes a dubious idea almost convincing.
“Is Pineapple on Pizza Actually Overrated?” — a classic kitchen topic on which two camps are always ready to argue.
Russian-language variant: “Is it true that the third season is better than the first?” Any subject on which the group has different opinions can be substituted.
How to treat the template
The main point of the template is the question in the title, not the participants. The caption works best when the object of the joke is a topic or habit, not the people in the photo. The teenagers in the frame are not stars or public figures; they simply filmed a video for friends, so it is not worth moving on to their personality or appearance.
A good caption uses a short question in the same format: “Is X Actually Overrated?” The more unexpected the substitution, the funnier the effect.
Why the format endures
Universality is the main reason for its long life. The joke does not require knowing the game; it is enough to have the familiar feeling that any object can be discussed too seriously. The English title gives the picture recognizability in the Russian-speaking environment as well, and the repeated question easily turns into an independent format.
