What Corvus is
Corvus is one brand of so-called “snus,” or tobacco-free nicotine products, sold in flat round tins (“pucks”) and meant to be placed under the lip. The catalog photo shows the brand's typical packaging: a light-green label with a black raven silhouette, the name Corvus, and a strength note (here, “Light”). The tin is open, and the pouches are visible inside.
Unlike classic tobacco snuff (nasvai, a traditional product) and chewing tobacco, these products were heavily marketed as a “less harmful” alternative to smoking. In 2019 they saw explosive growth in popularity in Russia, especially among teenagers and students, partly because they were easy to get and partly because of aggressive promotion through friends and social media.
Why snus became a meme topic
By late 2019 the nicotine-pouch trend had become so noticeable among young people that it turned into a public debate. Journalists and outlets wrote about the rapid spread of “snus mania” among schoolchildren, discussing health consequences and prospects for legislation restricting sales to minors.
For internet humor this translated into a recognizable set of images: bright tins of different brands, the characteristic gesture of placing a pouch, jokes about the smell and the sensation of use, and irony about how quickly a product that had been little known only recently became an almost mandatory accessory for teenage groups in the local yard.
Corvus among other brands
Corvus was one of dozens of brands competing in this market in the late 2010s, each with its own recognizable tin design and signature flavors. The design itself, a strict minimalist look with a raven, made Corvus one of the most memorable brands and easy to recognize in a photo even without a caption. That is why this particular tin often ends up in snus memes.
Jokes often personified the brands and compared them as rivals, discussing “strength,” price and availability, much as the internet tends to compare drinks or cigarettes.
Typical meme formats
The most common format is a close-up photo of the tin, as in the catalog image, captioned with something about the everyday nature of the item, such as “a schoolkid's new accessory” or an ironic comparison with ordinary school supplies. Another common variant is a collage placing the snus pack next to completely mundane objects, mocking how ordinary the product had become in certain circles.
There are also warning-style formats parodying official anti-smoking notices, adapted to snus. They use a deliberately serious tone that, against the general irony of the internet, itself reads as part of the joke.
Typical captions
Photos of tins are often captioned with lines like “when you forgot your charger but didn't forget Corvus” or “new school supplies: notebook, pen, puck.” They play on how routine such tins had become for part of the teen audience by late 2019, when the topic was actively discussed in the media and among parents.
