:3 (Cat Face)

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

:3 (Cat Face)

What this meme means

The text emoticon “:3” forms a simple cat face: the colon looks like eyes, and the number three is a small mouth. It can give a message a soft, playful, or pretendedly cute tone; its meaning is especially clear from the words around it.

A face made of two characters

The picture shows only the black characters “:3” on a white background, with no drawn ears and no separate character. If you tilt your head to the side, the colon becomes eyes and the rounded three becomes a small pushed-out mouth. This simple shape can be typed on an ordinary keyboard and inserted into a short message.

A user definition dated September 28, 2003, already describes :3 as a cat face connected with anime. Another entry from November 13 of the same year explains it through shyness, sly charm, and cuteness. These dated descriptions confirm early use, not authorship of the symbol. Several close interpretations help explain why the face could accompany both an affectionate remark and a mischievous confession.

The tone depends on the line

In the message “The cat fell asleep right on my backpack :3” the mark supports a tender reaction. In “Accidentally kept the last cookie for myself :3” the same face adds a sly edge and seems to soften the confession in advance. The dry phrase “I took your blanket” sounds different from “I took your blanket :3”: the second version adds a friendly smile.

This is not a universal emotion that the symbol always carries by itself. People can use it tenderly, ironically, or deliberately childishly; a serious sentence ending with this face can sometimes land in the wrong place.

Invented examples

“I watched one episode, now I know the opening credits by heart :3” turns a fan’s admission into light embarrassment. “I sent the meme to my teacher and only then noticed what time it was :3” sounds like an attempt to ease one’s own awkwardness.

And if you write “I burned the last piece of toast :3,” the cute mark enters a comic conflict with a minor catastrophe. These examples were invented for this article: in each case the symbol changes how the words are delivered, but does not cancel their literal meaning.

A cat’s smile without a separate picture

Unlike the emoticon “:)”, :3 does not merely sketch the arc of a smile: the two rounded parts of the three create a distinctive cat’s mouth. The symbol has no ears, whiskers, or body, but this one detail is enough for the reader to complete the face. This face is built differently from horizontal kaomoji such as “(=^.^=)”: in :3 the eyes and mouth stand along the line of text, so you have to mentally turn the image sideways to see it.

A text face does not need a separate file or a set of graphic stickers. In a chat, a game message, or a comment, it remains a single sequence of characters, although how they look depends on the font. This form is easy to copy, sits alongside words, and does not turn a short reply into a separate illustration. A large picture of the two characters only enlarges a familiar gesture from correspondence: the viewer recognizes the same mark that usually goes at the end of a sentence.
