What is shown in the picture

The drawing shows a round head in simple black-and-white graphics, with no body — just a thin line for the neck and a pair of hands below hint at a figure. The face conveys embarrassment: the eyes are narrowed and slightly lowered, the mouth is stretched into an uncertain wavy smile, and the cheeks are covered in blush. Next to the head is the caption "OH STOP IT, YOU," as if the character is saying it out loud.

The pink blush is the key element. It's exactly what sets the embarrassed "Stop it" apart from most other rage faces, which more often convey anger, irritation, or despair. The minimalist expression and the caption beside it show that the meme was conceived as an emotional reaction rather than a narrative character.

The simplicity of the drawing made it easy to copy and modify. The face could be quickly reproduced in any graphics editor, and this played a notable role in how fast the character spread across different sites.

Origin story

The character was created by an artist who posted it on their art blog GODBEAMS on December 23, 2010. By July 2012, the Tumblr post with the drawing had collected nearly 2,800 notes, a notable result for a single piece of art by the standards of the time.

The earliest mentions are tied to deviantArt: on February 14, 2011, a user named Fyi-Sus used the character in an image about how she reacts to compliments. The character's first appearance in a Rage Comics strip is dated September 2, 2011: it was a comic on the site Memebase about an awkward exchange with a friend. From that point on, the face became part of the genre.

In the first half of 2012, the character spread across rage comics sites, Reddit, 9gag, and Tumblr, often under the tag "oh stop it you." Fan pages on Facebook, created in November 2011 and March 2012, together racked up more than 30,000 likes by July 2012.

How the meme is used

The face is used when someone pays a compliment and the person doesn't know how to respond. The image says, "Oh, stop it, I'm embarrassed." It's often posted after words of thanks or praise directed at someone's work, appearance, or a successful joke.

There's also a reverse version — the character "Hey You, Stop It," which appeared in February 2012. It's used to express irritation or displeasure, serving as the emotional counterpart to the original face, but with the opposite charge.

In chats, the meme works as a quick reaction: it's instantly understood and doesn't require a drawn-out reply. Sometimes it's posted in place of text, simply to acknowledge someone's kindness and show that their words were touching.

Why the meme works

The humor rests on the contrast between the intention and the reaction. The compliment is pleasant, but the character is so embarrassed that they practically refuse to accept it, and that performative modesty draws a smile from the viewer, who recognizes a familiar situation in it.

The meme is also versatile: one face covers several scenarios at once, from flirting to praise in a work chat. On top of that, the drawing is easy to recognize by its thin lines and blush, which makes it easy to pick out among hundreds of other rage faces.

Its pairing with "Hey You, Stop It" shows how the meme evolved. Users created opposite emotions, expanding the family of characters and keeping interest alive in the rage comics style while the genre was at its peak.
