Reflection in the Pupil

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Reflection in the Pupil

What this meme means

“Reflection in the Pupil” is a template featuring a large eye of a girl Inkling from the Super Smash Bros. announcement. Instead of a glowing emblem, it shows an unexpected news item, object, or threat. A tiny insert explains the huge reaction: the viewer simultaneously sees the event and the surprise of the one who noticed it first.

Orange eye and fiery emblem

The image is almost entirely occupied by a single eye. An orange iris is surrounded by a black outline, and in the dark pupil glows a round emblem with intersecting lines. Bright orange highlights are visible on the right. There is no full face of the heroine here, so the impression comes from the sheer size of the close-up: the camera seems to have moved toward the person at the moment of a sudden discovery. This is the original version of the reflection, before other images began to be inserted into it.

The eye belongs to an Inkling from Splatoon. For a viewer of the game, the sign inside it immediately means Super Smash Bros., but in remakes this very spot becomes the variable part of the joke. If you replace the symbol with a familiar object, the gaze stays the same, but the cause of the surprise changes. The image needs no separate panel showing the event seen: it is already placed in the observer's eye, like a small scene inside a larger one.

Nintendo's announcement and the first substitutions

On March 8, 2018, Nintendo ended its Nintendo Direct presentation with a teaser for the new Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch. In the clip the Inklings fought, then the lighting changed and the girl turned toward an unexpected spectacle. The reflection of the emblem turned an ordinary Splatoon scene into a message about another game. This device was part of the announcement itself, so the meme inherited a ready-made dramatic reveal.

Remakes began to appear right after the presentation. Among the early variants is a post by the user kukui on Tumblr, where Sans from Undertale was added to the eye. This is an early trace of the spread; the sole inventor of the template is not identified. Already on March 9, Grandayy remade the video for the Skyrim announcement. Static pictures and video edits developed side by side: some were satisfied with a small reflection, while others kept the heroine's turn, the darkening, and the pause before the reveal.

Why a single insert is enough

The joke rests on a mismatch between a solemn reaction and what caused it. The cinematic presentation promises something of enormous scale, while the pupil may reflect an ordinary lost item or a silly inscription. It is precisely the seriousness of the surrounding frame that inflates the funny object. At the same time, the reflection also allows sincere delight: a familiar emblem of a beloved project may signal a long-awaited return rather than danger.

The same gaze can therefore be read as fright, recognition, or admiration. The insert and a short caption with the circumstances set the direction. The detail has to be discernible even inside a small black circle: a simple silhouette, a contrasting sign, or one short word is read faster than a complex screenshot. The video version adds waiting time; a still image, by contrast, forces the viewer to match the emotion with its cause immediately.

Three discoveries in everyday life

In a fictional scene, a person goes through an old jacket before a trip and finds a forgotten transit pass in a pocket. A small card appears in the pupil, and the caption says the hero had already been about to buy a new one. The dramatic eye turns a modest find into a spectacular return of an important item. Here the reflection evokes relief, although the visual presentation remains almost alarming.

Another fictional example involves a board game: a participant notices the last missing token under a cup. The token in the reflection explains the winner's gaze before any words are spoken. In a third invented situation, a plant lover discovers the first bud after a long wait. A tiny flower is inserted into the eye and captioned with a month of care. The result is sincere joy, exaggerated by the scale of a game announcement, rather than mockery of the hobby itself.
