Reality Is Full of Disappointments

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Reality Is Full of Disappointments

What this meme means

Thanos from “Avengers: Infinity War” first remarks that reality often disappoints, then corrects himself: it used to be that way, but now it can be whatever he wants. This line and the image of the gauntlet are used when you want to show a sharp shift from complaint to confident control over a situation.

What is depicted

The frame shows Thanos in half-profile, in a close-up. He looks down at the golden gauntlet pressed to his chest; the stones on the gauntlet glow, and a red one stands out among them. Behind him is dark space with orange tongues of fire and sparks, so the figure is lit by a warm, uneven light.

In the bottom left corner is a second character: a female figure with red hair and green skin, turned toward Thanos and partly cut off by the edge of the frame. The main subject remains Thanos and the gauntlet, and the hero's gaze is directed at it, not at his companion.

Where the line comes from

The scene is from “Avengers: Infinity War,” released in American theaters on April 27, 2018. Thanos is collecting the Infinity Stones, and the red stone on the gauntlet is the Reality Stone. In the scene he voices two related thoughts: reality often disappoints, but now it will be whatever he wishes.

These two parts live in memes in different ways. The first works as a sad observation, the second as a solemn declaration. Together they form a structure of complaint and response that can be carried over to any everyday situation. When and in which community the first memes based on the scene appeared has not been reliably established.

The mechanics of the joke

The joke is built on the contrast of two intonations. First comes almost human weariness: everything is not going the way one wanted. Then a sharp turn follows, in which the speaker announces that now he sets the rules. A pause is needed between the two parts; otherwise the sense of a change of scale disappears.

The seriousness of the picture matters too. The fire, the armor, and the gauntlet with its stones create an epic backdrop, and the caption brings it down to something trivial: Fridays, schedules, the total at the store. The grander the backdrop and the smaller the occasion, the stronger the effect.

Examples for your own captions

Three invented variants.

“Mondays often disappoint. That is, they used to. Now they start at noon.” The caption repeats the structure of the original and transfers it to personal plans.

“Lines at the store often disappoint. But today I found a checkout with no people.” Here the turn is not magical but everyday, and what is funny is that a small stroke of luck is presented as a victory over reality.

“The weather forecast often disappoints. Now I have an umbrella.” A short caption in which the promise of power shrinks to a simple object. The contrast between the pathos of the pose and the modest occasion makes the joke warm.

Why the scene gets quoted

The line is also handy because it can be said out loud in any company: it is short, rhythmic, and instantly recognizable. Someone who says it as a joke tries on the role of an all-powerful hero for a second, and listeners get the game without any explanation. That is why the template is often used not only in pictures but also in ordinary conversations, comments, and chat messages. It fits especially well in situations where the trouble can actually be fixed quickly: moving a meeting, closing a task, changing the evening's plans. Then the grandeur of the original turns into good-natured self-irony rather than bragging.

How not to spoil the template

A good caption has two parts: the state and the turn. If the text grows, the pause disappears, and with it the effect. Extra details are better cut.

The frame should not be applied to other people's misfortunes or real tragedies. Thanos is a villain in the film, and his words about remaking reality sound frightening, so the caption should stay playful and concern a harmless situation.
