Team Fortress 2

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Team Fortress 2

What this meme means

Class memes based on Team Fortress 2: the picture shows a stylized figure or render of the Sniper with a rifle, a hat and sunglasses, captioned “THE SNIPER.” The genre is built on transferring the character’s personality onto everyday situations, and its starting point was Valve’s short videos in which each class gets its own tone.

Who is in the picture

The character stands full length on a dark round base bearing the game’s emblem. He holds a rifle with a large scope, wears a wide-brimmed hat with a feather on his head, and his eyes are hidden behind dark sunglasses. He wears a light blue shirt with rolled-up sleeves, a vest with pockets over it, and a fingerless glove and a wristwatch on his right hand.

In the background is an enlarged, blurred head of the same character in sunglasses and a hat; in the upper left corner is a target emblem, and in the lower right corner is the large caption “THE SNIPER.” This layout resembles promo material or a class card, so the picture is easy to recognize even without context.

The game, the videos, and where the tone comes from

Team Fortress 2 came out in 2007 as part of the compilation The Orange Box. Later Valve released a series of short videos, “Meet the Team,” in which each class gets its own introductory film, including “Meet the Sniper.” The characters in these videos speak in a grotesque manner and behave noticeably differently from one another, which became the basis for later parodies.

In these introductions the Sniper is calm, calculating and laconic; in the game he is Australian, and his manner is presented as the opposite of his noisy teammates. Such a difference in character easily carries over into ordinary life, which is why the genre grew.

Why classes became a convenient template

Class memes work like character cards. Instead of a long description of a situation, it is enough to place the character and caption the situation: the viewer immediately understands what role the hero plays. The Sniper suits patient, unhurried and precise tasks, while the other classes cover the remaining scenes.

The “Meet the…” format proved universal: it can be transferred to any image, and many parodies have accumulated. When exactly the genre began and from which example is not reliably known, so no exact date is given here.

Captions that rely on the Sniper’s character

Each caption below shows a trait of the character: patience, distance or precision.

“I wait until my colleagues finish arguing, and only then say the right answer.” The Sniper’s patience carries over into negotiations, and the dramatic exit at the end creates a finale that resembles a shot.

“Ordered delivery and I’m standing by the window like on a hunt.” The image of a distant observation post turns the dull wait for a courier into a business operation, and the hat and sunglasses complete the irony.

“The report is ready on the first try, with no extra edits.” The character’s precision becomes the pride of an ordinary worker, and the gap between pathos and routine makes the caption funny.

“I found a quiet spot in the office and I silently listen to everyone.” Here the silence does the work: the character is described through what he does not say, and the viewer fills in the rest.

How to use the template

The picture works well for topics involving patience, precision or an unconventional approach. For other stories it is better to choose a different class, otherwise the joke loses its connection to the character.

The characters belong to the game’s rights holder, so the rights to the image should be considered separately for commercial use. For personal collages and reactions, a caption and clear context are usually enough.
