Kevin Mazur's photograph
The frame was shot by Kevin Mazur at the Oscars ceremony on February 22, 2015. That evening Travolta approached Scarlett Johansson and kissed her on the cheek. The photograph captured an intermediate moment of greeting, in which the facial expressions look out of sync. On the day of the ceremony the image was already being discussed in the Reddit photoshop community: users moved the leaning figure into new scenes or swapped out the person beside the actress.
Johansson later explained in a statement that the greeting was welcome and kind, and that the circulating freeze-frame did not convey the whole encounter. This is an essential part of the story: the popular reading of the photograph as rejection did not match the explanation from the participant herself. The meme plot grew out of a chosen fraction of a second, not out of a confirmed conflict between two actors. Therefore Johansson's calm face is used as a conventional role and does not prove any dislike of Travolta.
Awkwardness instead of romance
Travolta in a black suit approaches from the left and tilts his head toward the actress. Johansson in a green dress and a large green ornament keeps an upright posture and looks toward the camera. Behind them is a light ceremonial backdrop with silhouettes of statuettes. There is no added caption, no cut-out background, and no other character in the image. This is the photographic source from which the figure was later cut out for montages.
The comedy comes from the different directions of attention. Travolta is busy with the kiss, while Johansson keeps a direct gaze and a calm posture. A user may imagine that one person is trying to recapture an old closeness while the other has already switched to the camera, work, or a phone. The meme does not prove the intentions of the people in the photo: it is a visual role created by the choice of moment. Therefore a caption should describe an invented situation rather than attribute real words to celebrities.
A transferable gesture of approach
For a caption on the full frame, the desynchronization matters: one participant is occupied with contact, while the other seems to continue what they were doing. Both roles can be assigned not to people but to events. Then Travolta becomes a sudden notification, and Johansson a person trying to concentrate. When the figure is cut out, the mechanism changes: the leaning actor seems capable of kissing any unexpected neighbor. His unchanging gesture links entirely different photographs into a recognizable series.
In this format, direction matters more than the word “kiss.” The figure reaches right toward an object, intruding into an already finished composition. Even an inanimate object can take the role of an indifferent addressee. The original background and dress help identify the red carpet, but after editing they are not required: the recognizable lean preserves the action. Thus a solitary greeting has become a tool for creating new small scenes.
Three invented mismatched encounters
One participant has already said goodbye, while the other starts a new twenty-minute story: Travolta gets the role of the storyteller, Johansson that of a person with a hand on the door handle. The caption “I'm already home in my head / the conversation isn't over yet” explains the difference in tempo. The second example is a sale notification that appears precisely while you are deciding to buy nothing. The advertisement's approach looks excessively affectionate for an unwanted occasion.
For a photoshop edit, you can place the leaning figure next to a cold teapot and write “I'm going back to the tea I forgot about an hour ago.” The teapot does not respond at all, while the hero goes on with the meeting. This variant turns a celebrity into an ordinary forgetful person and uses the direction of the gesture. All three scenarios are invented for a new context; the real participants of the ceremony do not become heroes of these imaginary conversations.
