Lady Gaga Stumbles

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Lady Gaga Stumbles

What this meme means

Lady Gaga, on the red carpet of the Golden Globes in January 2019, reacted to a journalist’s remark about the resemblance of her dress to Judy Garland’s outfit. Her bewildered reaction and a phrase in the spirit of “we never said that” became a meme for awkwardness and uncertainty.

Frame from the red carpet

The image shows the singer standing against a backdrop of a hall with people and cameras. Her hair is light blue, gathered in a high bun, her eyes are lined with glittering shadows, around her neck is a multi-tiered stone ornament, and a tattoo is visible on her shoulder. The dress is pale blue, with bare shoulders. She is looking at a tablet held by her interlocutor, and her mouth is slightly open: her expression is surprised.

Next to her stands a woman with long light hair in a dark glossy top; a microphone with the “ET” logo is visible in the frame. Memes most often use this kind of frame: the face and pose say more than words, so even without sound it is clear that the heroine has been caught off guard.

Dress and the 1954 film

During the interview the journalist showed the singer a photo and pointed out the resemblance of her outfit to the dress of Judy Garland from the 1954 film “A Star Is Born”. For Gaga this was especially fitting, because she had recently starred in the new version of “A Star Is Born”. The resemblance turned out to be unexpected for the singer, and for a second she was thrown.

It cannot be claimed that this was a deliberate homage: Gaga herself in this episode reacts to the journalist’s suggestion rather than confirming her own intention. The details of the outfit and the order of the lines differ across retellings.

The phrase “We never said that”

According to retellings, at first Gaga stumbled and answered in the spirit of “we never said that”, and then her reaction became playful: she agreed that the resemblance was noticeable and jokingly went along with the homage version. The exact words differ across retellings, so they are not given verbatim here.

It was the second part of the answer that created the joke: bewilderment gave way to fun. The meme takes the first phrase as a ready-made formula for any awkward situation in which a person has been caught off guard and tries to wriggle out.

Why the reaction became a template

The video spread quickly across social networks, and many clips appeared in which captions about forgotten chores, failed answers and sudden confessions were placed under the frame. Reactions of bewilderment live long because they are recognizable in any everyday situation.

The strength of the frame lies in the gap between the formula and the emotion: the phrase sounds like a refusal, but the face gives away that the person already agrees they have been caught in the coincidence. That is why the meme works both as self-irony and as a joke about one’s own slips.

Caption examples

Below are examples invented for this template, not quotes.

“We never said that. But someone still ate the last pie.” The phrase from the meme keeps the denial, and the second part immediately reveals the guilt. It is funny that the denial sounds convincing only until the end of the sentence.

“I didn’t send that. But the message has already been read by everyone in the chat.” Here the bewilderment moves to a digital situation: the mechanics are the same, but the occasion is everyday and recognizable.

“We never said that, no, but the weekend plan looks very much like rest.” The caption uses the same duality: the denial sounds uncertain, and the viewer immediately understands that the plan has already been revealed.
