A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Forever Alone

What this meme means

Forever Alone is a rage comics character: a pale, lonely man with a strained, awkward smile who embodies eternal loneliness. It became a self-ironic label for longing for a relationship or any moment of feeling abandoned.

What's shown

The image is done as a four-panel rage comic. In the first panel, the caption "herp derp, beautiful summer day!" shows a carefree character; in the second, a troll bee flies in captioned "LE BZZZZZZZ"; and in the third, the character yelps "OW! shit that hurt!" The final panel is what makes the meme recognizable: it introduces Forever Alone, a thin character with an awkward, almost pitiful smile and wide-open eyes.

Next to him are red captions reading "2 mins later" and repeated "FFFFUUUU," which tie him to the rage comics tradition. The whole scene is built on an abrupt shift from a sunny day to sudden loneliness. What's funny here is that the character's emotion is delivered without drama, as if he's already resigned to his situation.

Origin

The first known comic featuring this character was published on May 28, 2010 on the site FunnyJunk by user Azuul in the thread "April Fools." This was not 4chan but a separate user-content site. The character is considered an offshoot of Rage Guy, who first appeared on 4chan in 2009. The original artist isn't confirmed, so authorship remains unclear.

In early June 2010 a similar version appeared on 4chan, and on August 5 of that year a Reddit user posted "Prom FFFUUUU," which got more than 275 upvotes. On September 15, 2010 the subreddit r/foreveralone appeared, and it became clear that the image could live on its own, apart from the comics that produced it.

Spread

As of September 2010, FunnyJunk had more than 23,000 search results for the term, and Tumblr had over 50,000. The character quickly moved from the rage comics format into pictures with short captions, which appeared on Memegenerator and Quickmeme between December 2010 and January 2011. That's how the image became a meme with universal text placed above the character's head.

In 2011 members of 4chan and Reddit planned a "spontaneous" flash mob on Times Square, for which they created fake OkCupid profiles. Sony Ericsson used the character in an ad campaign in November 2011. These events show that the meme moved beyond internet communities and became part of mainstream culture.

Meaning and use

Forever Alone usually denotes loneliness, failed relationships, and general longing. It's most often used ironically: a person jokes about not having a partner, or replies to someone else's story about a failed date. Self-irony allows talking about something sad with a smile, and that's where the meme's strength lies.

From the meme grew the snowclone phrase "Forever an X," where any word can be substituted for X: it's used to denote chronic bad luck in activities, hobbies, or specific situations. The image stopped being only about romance and became a universal label for loneliness in a particular area of life.

Why the meme works

The main reason for its popularity is the recognizability of the emotion. Almost everyone has experienced the feeling of being left alone at some point, even briefly. The character expresses that emotion without drama, with an almost absurd smile, and the viewer laughs at themselves along with him.

The second factor is the format's flexibility. The same image moves from comic to captioned picture to gif, and the captions change endlessly. Such a meme is easy to adapt to any topic, which is why it outlived many other rage characters. It also matters that Forever Alone is rarely used to mock a specific person: it's more a joke about oneself than about others.
