Fap Guy

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Fap Guy

What this meme means

Fap Guy is a rage comics character with a tense face and head thrown back, surrounded by repeated "fap, fap, fap" captions. It expresses extreme pleasure with a crude, openly sexual undertone, so it circulates mostly in narrow circles of internet humor.

What's shown

The character is drawn in comic-book style: eyes squeezed shut or rolled back, mouth half-open in a tense grimace, head thrown back. Around it are often placed short captions of "fap, fap, fap," which set an ironic sound backdrop. The expression looks both blissful and pained at once.

The catalog still shows a fragment of the comic Now Kiss, in which a large face with a wide-open mouth accompanies a scene of apologies and a demand for a kiss. It's this grimace that became the basis for Fap Guy: the character borrowed the facial expression but carried it over into a different, overtly sexual theme.

Origin

The character itself is tied to the rage comics genre and appeared in 2010. The facial expression was borrowed from the Now Kiss character, created in February 2010. In May of that year, a FunnyJunk user going by TehEman published the first comic featuring Fap Guy, captioned "FAP FAP," and from that moment the character began to spread.

The vocabulary itself predates the meme. The word "fap" is onomatopoeic slang for masturbation, and its earliest known use is considered to be the webcomic Sexy Losers' "Video Girl Etchi" from April 28, 1999. The term entered Urban Dictionary in 2002 and has since been widely used in internet humor and on community sites.

The origin of the grimace itself is considered only partly established: the link to Now Kiss is confirmed, but who exactly drew the first versions of Fap Guy isn't specified in accounts of the meme.

Spread

In 2011 Smosh published a compilation of image macros using the word, and in 2012 videos like "Top 10 Games to Fap To" from Machinima and "17 GIFs That Look Like They're Fapping" from MTV showed how the term had made its way into mainstream media. That's how the joke moved beyond its original communities.

The character spread mainly through comics and reaction images on imageboards and news communities. It was convenient to use in discussions where someone wanted to express delight or irony about something someone else said, so it quickly became a template.

Typical use

The meme is used to show an extreme degree of enjoyment of something, often with crude irony. It's posted in response to a particularly good joke or an unexpectedly pleasant surprise, exaggerating the delight for comic effect.

Unlike more neutral reactions, Fap Guy implies an ironic and bluntly crude tone, which is why it's chosen in narrow chats and groups where that kind of humor is accepted. In public spaces the meme is usually used cautiously.

Why the meme works

The main joke rests on the contrast between a mundane situation and an openly exaggerated reaction. The exaggerated facial expression and sound captions turn a personal subject into a grotesque frame, which comes across more as a joke about the genre itself than a serious statement.

The meme also reflects the general traits of rage comics: simple lines, recognizable faces, and universal emotions. Thanks to that, it's understood even without knowing the source material, and it remains one of the notable examples of the early internet's unapologetic humor.
