Google vs. Bing

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Google vs. Bing

What this meme means

The “Google vs. Bing” meme uses a screenshot from the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: a character stands behind the counter of a gun shop, and instead of a head he has the Bing search engine logo. The image plays on the joking stereotype that Bing serves up “what Google won't show you,” and it suits captions about choosing between the “right” and the “forbidden” source.

What the image shows

The frame is taken from the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. A man in a green tank top and protective pants stands behind the counter of a gun shop, holding a pistol with a silencer. Assault rifles hang on the wall behind him, and on the counter to the left is a crate labeled AMMO. In the upper right corner the game interface is visible: a fist icon, a bar, and a score in dollars. Instead of a face, a white circle with the orange Bing logo is superimposed on his head.

This template should be distinguished from the popular two-panel “Google vs. Bing” comparisons: here only one picture with Bing circulates, without a Google counterpart. What it looked like alongside a paired panel is not established, and it is not worth inventing that context.

Where the image comes from

San Andreas, released in 2004, has long been a source of memes thanks to its low-polygon graphics and vivid situations. The Bing search engine was launched by Microsoft in 2009. Combining these two things into one picture belongs to internet humor rather than to some well-known original source: the author and the date of the first publication of this collage are not established.

One should be cautious about accounts of the “exact” date and venue where the meme appeared. It can be said with confidence only that jokes comparing the two search engines have existed for a long time, and the collage itself was assembled from a game screenshot and an official logo.

What the joke is about

It rests on a stereotype common in internet jokes: that Bing is supposedly better suited to “special” queries than Google. The real differences between search engines are more complicated, and both have safe-search filters, so the meme should be read as hyperbole, not as a comparison of technologies.

The gun shop adds drama to the scene. The logo in place of a face turns the user into an “armed” person who came to the shelf with goods and knows exactly what he wants. In this way, a joke built on nothing turns into a scene from a crime thriller.

Caption examples

“When Google found nothing past the tenth page, but Bing already has the query you need” — a joke about the last hope. “Me, when I opened Bing just for the loyalty points” — a real everyday situation: users joke about rewards programs. “A closed tab with homework and an open Bing tab” — a contrast between the serious and the frivolous. “My default browser that I never changed” — self-irony about settings nobody touches.

How to use it

The meme suits self-irony and captions about tabs, search, browsers, and user habits. Don't present it as proof that Bing serves up forbidden content: it is a joke, not a claim. Captions work best when built on contrast: a serious, dull search versus the “gun shop.”

If the caption refers to the game, remember that the image comes from an action film: it should not be accompanied by calls to violence or stories about real weapons.
