Distracted Boyfriend

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Distracted Boyfriend

What this meme means

A young man turns to look at a passing woman while his companion stares at him in outrage. In memes the scene becomes a template for any temptation: the familiar commitment stays beside you, but a new idea has all your attention.

A staged photograph, not a real betrayal

The photo was taken by the Spanish photographer Antonio Guillem in 2015. It is a staged shoot with models: three participants act out an instantly readable situation for stock photography. According to the author, the shoot took place in Girona. The facial expressions and the positions of the figures were meant to explain the story at once, with no extra text.

It is especially important here to tell the roles apart from the real people. The photograph does not document the models' personal relationships. The companion's outrage and the man's interest are elements of a staged scene, which later became convenient stand-ins for abstract concepts.

From Phil Collins to new stories

One early captioned version appeared on Facebook in January 2017: the trio illustrated a joke about Phil Collins turning from prog rock to pop. By the summer, the photograph had spread across Twitter and other platforms and became known as Distracted Boyfriend. In an August 2017 interview, Antonio Guillem said that the models had alerted him to its popularity.

The photographer had taken the same models in other poses, and the internet soon rearranged the participants across the shoot. That extended the joke beyond a single frame: viewers imagined not only the boyfriend’s new choice but also what happened before or after the glance.

Three roles in one joke

The boyfriend usually stands for the one who is choosing: the meme's author, a company, a person's attention, or a whole audience. The companion represents an existing commitment or a habitual activity. The passing woman gets the role of the new temptation. Once these three assignments are clear, the joke can be read without even a grammatically complete sentence.

The simplest conflict is a useful task versus a pleasant distraction. However, the new object does not have to be bad, nor the old one good. You can show a change of musical taste, an unexpected scientific hypothesis, or a switch from one hobby to another. What matters is a visible shift of attention, while the moral judgment is left to the caption.

Examples of role assignments

The boyfriend is "me at bedtime", the companion is "eight hours of sleep", the passing woman is "a video about repairing nineteenth-century clocks". The comedy comes not just from staying up late but from the completely unexpected topic that makes sleep wait.

The boyfriend is "my weekend", the companion is "finish cleaning", the passing woman is "sort through a box of old photographs". The new activity formally resembles cleaning but easily swallows all the remaining time.

The boyfriend is "the author of a short story", the companion is "write the ending", the passing woman is "invent a backstory for the shopkeeper from chapter two". Here the picture shows creative procrastination: the person keeps working but drifts further and further from finishing.

These variants were written as new examples. When replacing the captions, it helps to first check the logic without the picture: who is getting distracted, from what, and by what. If one answer is missing, the viewer has to guess the construction itself rather than the joke.
