Two frames from different films
On the left is a curly-haired ginger boy with a round face and braces; he grins widely and reaches a hand forward. He wears a purple T-shirt with the number 2. On the right is a completely different hero: a muscular man in a light form-fitting suit with a red-orange fiery pattern and a red cape, with a good-natured and slightly bewildered face.
The right-hand character, judging by accompanying compilations, is Titan (Hal Stewart) from the DreamWorks film Megamind, released in 2010. This detail is identified from the film’s description and meme compilations, not from a frame-by-frame comparison. Which cartoon the left character comes from could not be established, so he is not named here.
Why they ended up side by side
It is stressed that these are two different heroes brought together by editing. The pair took shape in 2021: that autumn, according to a publication on a Russian TV website, Megamind was remembered on Reddit and YouTube, and videos titled “Ryzhiy stanovitsya kachkom” became popular in a separate wave. When someone first placed the two heroes side by side is unknown.
The surface resemblance — ginger or brown hair, a round face, an open smile — lets the viewer believe in a transformation, even though these are different characters.
The format is often made as a short video: first the left hero on screen, then a sharp cut to the right one to lively music. Such editing strengthens the sense of instant transformation, and the caption defines what exactly is being talked about. But even in a static version the same logic works: two pictures and one expectation betrayed.
How the joke works
The meme is built on the expectation of change. On the left is the “before”, on the right the “after”, and between them a promise: patience, training, time. The joke is that the transformation looks instant and absolute, as in the movies rather than in life.
The second layer is irony about one’s own confidence. When a caption says “I’ll be on a sports diet in a year”, the person admits they are hoping for a miracle themselves. That is why the meme works for self-irony and for good-natured teasing about friends who “start on Monday”.
Captions that work
“Me at 10 p.m. / Me at 6 a.m., when I finally went to the gym.” The gap between intention and result is taken to a grotesque point.
“My code before refactoring / after refactoring in my head.” Here the change exists only in the author’s imagination, and it is that gap that makes people laugh.
“My weekend plans / my real weekend.” The caption works in reverse: on the left is an energetic mood, on the right an unreachable image, and between them is the couch.
“Me before the first tea with sugar / after the first mug without it.” A small “transformation” gets the scale of a superhero.
How to use the template
It works best with captions about personal growth, habits or expectations of a vacation. Don’t label the left hero with a real person’s name or link him to real people: he is drawn, and the joke about “before” and “after” should be about a situation, not the appearance of a specific person.
If the caption mentions weight or sport, keep the tone good-natured: what makes it funny is the contrast between expectation and reality, not body type.
