Screaming Krosh (Krosh Krichit)

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Screaming Krosh (Krosh Krichit)

What this meme means

A 3D still of Krosh from the animated series Smeshariki, mouth wide open in a scream, used as a reaction to a minor setback. A related line of the meme shows Shork, Krosh’s adult double, vanishing from the frame.

Blue frame with open mouth

The frame is a computer-generated 3D image shot in cold blue light. Blue Krosh stands slightly hunched, arms pressed to his sides, dark brows drawn together, mouth wide open, two front teeth visible. A cord with a ring lies at the bottom left, and the background is blurred and looks like folds of cloth or snow.

From a single frame it is impossible to say exactly which scene it comes from, and there is no need to invent one. The expression, however, reads at once: this is not quiet sadness but a scream, with both resentment and panic in it.

Two jokes under one name

The first line of the meme is simple: Krosh screams when something goes wrong. The second is more complex. In the film Smeshariki: Deja Vu (directed by Denis Chernov, Petersburg studio), Krosh wants to throw a birthday party for Kopatych and turns to an agency offering time travel. Because of his carelessness the friends end up in different eras, and Krosh has to gather them up together with his second self — the adult, grumpy Shork, who appears because of a temporal paradox.

According to one retelling, clips in which Shork “disappears” under editing with a scream sound began to be collected on TikTok in summer 2021. The exact first post could not be established, so it is more accurate to speak of a period rather than a day. Viewers who did not recognize the character called the clip “Krosh Disappears”, and that mistake became fixed in the title.

It matters to distinguish levels of knowledge. It is established that the film exists, that Shork in it is an adult double of Krosh, and that the meme is connected with this character. It is not established who first assembled the clip or which exact scene gave the frame with the scream: different retellings name different episodes, and there is no way to confirm others’ guesses here.

Why the scream is funny

Smeshariki is a family cartoon with a gentle tone, so a sudden shriek from such a world sounds unexpected. The calmer the world around, the funnier one of its residents breaking down. Krosh is also known as a restless enthusiast, so his panic seems exaggerated and therefore safe for a joke.

Shork adds a second mechanic: disappearance. The hero not only worries but vanishes from the frame, as if events were too heavy to stay in. It is a joke about wanting the ground to swallow you up.

Captions that work

“Me when I realized the deadline was yesterday.” The one screaming can still be helped, and a ridiculous trifle is turned into a catastrophe — the joke rests on that contrast.

“Mom: we’re going to visit. Me: is that mandatory?” The scream here is not about the guests but about the inner protest of someone for whom everything has already been decided.

“Checked my balance at the end of the month.” The reaction is turned up to the maximum over an everyday cause; viewers recognize the feeling, so the scream doesn’t seem alien.

“When someone in the chat wrote: ‘we need to talk.’” The caption is small, but it makes the viewer draw an unpleasant scene for themselves — and the picture does the rest.

How to use the frame

The frame works best without extra words: one short phrase about an everyday annoyance and nothing more. If you want a reaction in a chat, it is enough to send the picture right after bad news.

Don’t use it when the person in the chat is genuinely upset: the joke is aimed at small disappointments, and for serious situations it is too loud. For the Shork line, a short clip or GIF in which the hero vanishes at the end works better — in a static picture that part of the joke is lost.
