Plankton Groans

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Plankton Groans

What this meme means

Plankton Groans uses an eerie stylized version of the SpongeBob character: eyes and mouth become dark hollows, the face is covered in wrinkles. In recent short videos, a low, drawn-out groan was paired with captions about disgusting, irritating, or simply unbearable little things.

Green face with closed eyes against a blue field

The image shows a close-up of Plankton against a dark blue, almost starry background. His green face is disproportionately stretched, his eyes appear closed or darkened, his mouth open in a long dark grimace. Wrinkles are visible around the mouth and cheeks. This is not a regular frame from the cartoon series but a stylized creepy edit: the familiar character looks as if groaning heavily.

The background and facial expression create a supernatural feeling, but the picture is not a frame from an official episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. The origin of the specific version of the picture should be distinguished from how it was later used with sound and captions.

The old 'Plenkton' and image history

One of the earliest known versions of the image appeared on April 22, 2010, in a publication by digital artist Moopintot titled Plenkton. Plankton was turned into a scary parody: the face was darkened, grain and wrinkles added, eyes and mouth made black. This image circulated in internet horror circles long before the short video format of 2024.

Later the edit became linked to a fictional story Plankton Got Served — a fan creepypasta about an allegedly lost episode. That story is not an episode of the cartoon series and does not confirm the real existence of a 'lost' broadcast. The image could appear in various re-uploaded or altered versions, so authorship of the early edit does not mean authorship of all later versions.

How a groan was added to the old picture

In 2024, short video creator planktongemendo began publishing the image together with a low groaning sound effect. One of their videos in October attracted many views, and in December captions about unpleasant, irritating, or revolting situations began appearing under the same sound. This is a new wave of using an old image, not the moment the edit itself was made.

The exact origin of the sound could not be established: it resembles a low drawn-out groan, but available confirmations do not reliably connect it to a specific film, game, or person. Therefore, it is more accurate to call it a sound effect rather than a character quote or famous scene.

From horror to everyday disgust

Plankton is simultaneously familiar to viewers from a children's cartoon yet looks in this edit like a horror movie character. This clash of registers turns fright into comedy. The caption usually names a specific unpleasantness, and the groan seems to express reaction before the narrator manages to formulate words.

The format is especially convenient for moments when small trouble feels like personal catastrophe: spilled drink, a missed alarm, or a sudden smell. The more specific the situation, the clearer the reason for the reaction. It's not necessary to attribute real pain or emotions to the image; it's a conventional reaction picture.

Examples of captions for the groaning sound

'Already got into bed but remembered I left the window open.' The sound intensifies frustration over a small task discovered at a very bad moment.

'Opened the container and realized the soup survived the weekend better than I did.' Here the picture adds disgusted surprise, and the caption explains its source.

'Alarm: two minutes till wake-up. Me:' This is not a story about a terrible event but a familiar reaction to another morning; the mismatch between the grotesque face and the simple cause makes the joke.
