Aunt Cass with Cleavage

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Aunt Cass with Cleavage

What this meme means

An edited-image meme: Aunt Cass, a supporting character from Disney's Big Hero 6 (in Russian, 'Город героев'), is digitally altered to have a deep neckline and an enlarged bust. The altered frame spread as a template for jokes about an unexpectedly 'adult' reworking of an animated character.

The character and the film

Aunt Cass is a secondary but noticeable character in Disney's full-length animated film Big Hero 6 (2014), in which she looks after the main characters and runs a café. In the original animation she is an ordinary, good-natured middle-aged woman with no emphasized sexualized look. The scene in the image is her typical everyday setting in the café kitchen, surrounded by ketchup bottles and cups.

What the photoshop does

The meme is built on digital editing of a specific frame. Users enlarged the character's bust and added a deep neckline that is absent from the original animation, leaving the rest of the scene and background almost unchanged. The contrast between the recognizable, harmless everyday scene and the deliberately out-of-place edit is the basis of the joke: a viewer familiar with the film reads the swap instantly.

There are several versions of this edit, with different degrees of 'enlargement' and different drawing of the neckline, but all of them use the same source frame from the film: the café kitchen scene in which the heroine rests her head on her hand and looks at the camera in surprise. That makes the meme easy to recognize even across different versions.

Why the image went viral

Photoshop reworks of family cartoon characters are a steady genre of internet humor built on the element of surprise: the more 'innocent' the source seems, the stronger the contrast with a deliberately inappropriate edit. In this sense Aunt Cass was a convenient target: a secondary character of a family film who was not especially recognizable before the meme, and whose alteration needs no context to read as a joke.

A similar approach had been used before on characters from Disney and Pixar films: users regularly rework frames featuring family animation heroes, adding deliberately 'adult' details of appearance or setting, so as to get comedy precisely from the collision between the original's childlike aesthetic and the adult edit.

Spread

The altered image circulated on imageboards and pages devoted to animation and photoshop memes in 2020, several years after the film came out. This is the typical gap in such jokes between the release of the source and the appearance of the meme, which grows not out of the plot but out of a standalone viral image.

The meme's popularity was also helped by the fact that Big Hero 6 remains a recognizable, often rewatched family film: the audience that grew up with it identifies the scene and character even without a caption, which makes the alteration an instantly readable joke that needs no explanation.

The character's status outside the meme

It is important that Aunt Cass is a wholly fictional drawn character, not a real person. The joke rests on reworking animation, not on claims about the appearance or qualities of any living person, which distinguishes this meme from harassment or the sexualization of real people.

In discussions the image is often accompanied by ironic comments such as 'Disney's dubbing studio would never have signed off on this' or 'a remaster nobody asked for'. The caption usually plays on the very fact of an unexpected intervention in a character familiar from childhood, not on any qualities of the character or of real people connected with the film.
