The off-screen object was recording software
The photo is connected to joint studio work by Young Thug and Lil Durk in June 2018. One of the known early meme traces is a post by @youngfishgod on Twitter on June 16. The user presented the focused gaze as the checking of a friend's essay. Then other explanations of the invisible object appeared: household appliances, purchases, computer tasks. Screenshots of such posts spread on Reddit as well.
On June 20 a journalistic piece clarified the real situation: asked a direct question, Lil Durk answered with the name Pro Tools, a sound-editing program. The musicians were doing vocal recording. Sound engineer Alex Tumay, who worked with Young Thug, explained that the rapper had learned to make changes to music projects himself. Therefore the serious gaze does not prove confusion before an unfamiliar technology. The meme story about two people facing an incredible problem exists on top of an ordinary workflow.
Two gazes in one direction
Young Thug occupies the right side of the photograph in close-up. He leans forward, wearing a denim jacket, glasses and several chains; his eyebrows are drawn together and his forehead is furrowed. Lower on the left sits Lil Durk in dark clothing, with wide-open eyes and a slightly parted mouth. In the background on the left are other people and details of a dark room. The photo has no added captions.
Both main participants look in the same direction, but the screen and its content are not shown. This gap defines the structure of the future joke: the viewer first notices the intensity of the reaction, then gets its cause from the caption. The difference in the figures' positions makes it possible to cast one as a summoned specialist and the other as the person who discovered the problem. This is a possible reading of the composition, not an established hierarchy between the two musicians during the shoot.
A very serious check of a small question
The format often exaggerates the scale of the task. A forward lean and a furrowed brow look like the start of a complex investigation, although the caption may be about choosing a button or looking for a minor mistake. The businesslike focus of two adults turns such a detail into an event that seems to need an almost team meeting. The outward seriousness stays the same, while the level of importance changes together with the explanation of the invisible screen.
The scene can also be read without mocking the difficulty. Sometimes one person helps another by carefully checking every detail; sometimes both are surprised by a result they do not yet trust. The invisible object leaves the relationship open. The joke about a mentor emphasizes different roles, while the joke about a joint check emphasizes shared effort. In both cases the photo conveys the moment before the answer, when the participants are still studying the situation and the viewer can imagine many entirely different reasons for such attention.
Three invented investigations
First example: “My friend and I are looking for seven extra rubles on the bill after a shared lunch.” A small sum receives attention worthy of serious financial expertise. Here both figures represent equal participants in the check, and the imagined screen could be an ordinary photo of the receipt.
In a second variant, someone shows an experienced player the instructions for a board game: “He promised to explain it in a minute and got to the third page of exceptions.” Young Thug becomes the specialist who also has to study things carefully. The third example: “Checking whether the save still exists after three hours of playing.” The focus is now quite understandable for the characters, but exaggerated for the viewer. All three situations are invented and place a specific object of joint checking outside the frame, without changing the real studio story behind the photo.
