Grudinin Without a Mustache

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Grudinin Without a Mustache

What this meme means

“Grudinin Without a Mustache” is a set of memes about a bet between Pavel Grudinin and Yuri Dud before the 2018 presidential election. A familiar feature of his appearance became a visual condition of the wager: after a result below fifteen percent, users pictured the politician without a mustache, and later a recording appeared in which he actually fulfills the promise.

The bet before the vote

The bet was discussed during Pavel Grudinin's interview with Yuri Dud on February 6, 2018. The condition was tied to a fifteen-percent threshold in the presidential election: a result below it meant Grudinin would shave off his mustache. For viewers, this made an abstract forecast unusually concrete. The outcome of the promise could be checked by a well-known feature of the face, rather than by further explanations from the participants of the conversation.

The vote took place on March 18. After the first results, users began discussing when the politician would fulfill the condition, and they circulated edited portraits without a mustache. Grudinin's final result was 11.77 percent. On March 24, a video was published in which he actually shaves off his mustache. The meme story therefore includes both the anticipation of the action and its real completion.

One portrait and a missing detail

The image shows Grudinin in a dark suit, a white shirt and a gray tie. He has short gray hair, and the familiar mustache above his upper lip is missing. Behind him is a dark curtain; on the left, in the blurred foreground, there is a small red flag and a figurine. This is a portrait, with no razor, sink or sequence of frames showing the process of shaving.

The format of the photo edits presented the promised change in advance. For someone used to seeing the politician with a mustache, a small retouch unexpectedly changed the face's recognizability a great deal. Such a portrait works as a visual answer to the question “what will he look like.” The actual date of the bet's fulfillment is established by the March 24 recording; a separate undated image without a mustache does not replace it.

Appearance as the visible outcome of the dispute

The meme combines a serious public forecast with an almost everyday consequence. The conversation about the election is carried over to appearance, and the result can be expressed in a single edited photograph. Instead of a table of percentages, the viewer gets a changed face. Thanks to this, the picture is understandable even to someone who did not follow the details of the campaign but heard the terms of the bet.

In the remakes, the imagined hairstyles, resemblances to other people and captions about keeping promises changed. The ability to edit the portrait sped up the joke: an image of the desired or expected outcome appeared before the action itself. Once the promise was fulfilled, the photos without a mustache also began to read as a reminder of a finished bet. A single external detail tied together the interview, the wait after the vote and the final recording.

What could be staked in a fictional scene

All the examples below are invented and do not relate to the real bet. In the first, friends argue about who will assemble a model ship faster. The loser promises to wear a paper captain's hat for a week. The meme edit of his portrait appears already during the assembly: the group in advance pictures the overly confident participant in a new look.

In the second invented variant, a person promises to name their houseplant cactus after a rival if they lose a chess game. After the defeat, friends make a jokey label for the pot. The visible change fixes the result and makes it possible to retell the bet without a long description of the moves.

The third invented situation is a promise to move a favorite mug to the farthest shelf if a sports prediction fails. The next day the group sends a photo of the empty usual spot. As in the portrait without a mustache, the absence of a small detail becomes the main message. What matters here is the recognizable trace of the fulfilled condition, which gives the prediction a funny and understandable sequel.
