Ideal GF

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Ideal GF

What this meme means

Ideal GF is a simple drawing of a girl that forum users redrew into endless variations of the “ideal girlfriend.” An early relative of the format appeared on 4chan in 2015 as a game with the image of an ideal partner, while a separate series of girlfriend variants took shape on /r9k/ in the autumn of 2016. The image keeps only a girl with long hair and no explanatory labels: the joke has to be completed by the caption.

The drawing before the label

The picture has a white background and a black outline: long hair, a small face, short arms, a triangular dress and thin legs. There is no name, no character traits, no object nearby. This emptiness matters: what we have is not a finished character but a place that can be filled. Any caption can easily declare the figure a board game specialist, a fan of a particular band, or a person who always knows where the spare cable is. The drawing itself stays nearly unchanged; what changes is the promise of what her character will be.

The earlier neighboring format was called Your Ideal Partner: in 2015, on the /fa/ board of 4chan, participants drew themselves beside an imagined ideal partner. In September 2016, an invitation to create various girlfriend variants from a single MS Paint template already appeared on /r9k/. These are not entirely the same series: the first template linked two people and self-presentation, while the second focused on types of the “ideal girl.”

How a forum template became a series

In a /r9k/ thread from September 29, 2016, an anonymous poster invited participants to redraw the girl and come up with her variations. While the discussion lasted it gathered hundreds of replies; the next day a Reddit user moved the collection to /r/4chan, where a new audience saw it. In 2017 separate variants such as Robot GF and Princess GF appeared, which took the game beyond the original board. This is more a chain of dated traces than a moment when one author finally invented the format: participants took the old simple figure and kept redrawing it.

The English abbreviation GF stands for “girlfriend,” rendered in Russian as devushka (“girl”) or podruga (“girlfriend”). But the joke does not require a realistic conversation about relationships. Its comedy often rests on declaring one trait to be the whole formula of a person: “the ideal girlfriend because she can set up a router” or “because she doesn’t send voice messages.” The praise becomes excessively narrow and therefore sounds like self-irony about one’s own expectations.

What the empty portrait promises

The dated 2017 variants show how redrawing works in practice: Robot GF and Princess GF keep the recognizable idea of the same “ideal girl,” but change her type at the level of the image. The name Robot GF promises a mechanical version; Princess GF promises a fairy-tale title and a matching look. Instead of one more caption on an unchanged silhouette, the author turns the template into another visual genre. This matters for the original drawing: it is simple enough that even a small change of clothing, details or shape reads as a new variant rather than a new character unconnected to the series.

In a typical variation you can keep the long hair and dress but add a crown and a solemn pose, so the caption “a princess who keeps every receipt” sets festive status against a small everyday habit. Or replace the dress with a square body and draw an antenna: “a robot that asks every evening whether to update the shopping list.” These are invented variants, not descriptions of specific archival drawings. They show two different ways to continue the series: one turns the original silhouette into a fairy-tale type, the other adds machine traits to it.

Invented ideal GF variants

“Ideal girl: knows which charger fits every old phone.” The caption turns everyday usefulness into a grand virtue. “Ideal GF: understands that ‘I’ll send it right now’ means searching for a file across five folders.” A joke about shared patience and computer clutter. “Ideal girlfriend: comes to the picnic with a spreadsheet marking who gets which sandwich.” Here the humor is that excessive organization is presented as a romantic ideal. All three situations are invented. They work with the empty drawing in different ways: through a narrow skill, a couple’s habit, and planning taken to absurdity.
