Yoda in the first prequel

The image refers to Yoda from The Phantom Menace, George Lucas's 1999 film. The little green master is one of the oldest mentors of the Jedi Order. In the original scene he closes his eyes and reflects; the meme's sniffing caption describes a later interpretation of the pose, not a literal action confirmed by the film's plot.

In the original version of The Phantom Menace, Yoda was mainly portrayed by a puppet operated by Frank Oz. In an interview about the prequels, animation director Rob Coleman recalls this separately. The character shown here has soft facial folds, sparse light hair, and a puppet-like texture. This look differs from the digital Yoda familiar from other parts of the saga and gives the reaction a special warm expressiveness.

How reflection became pleasure

Among the early traces of the template is an upload to a meme generator service in November 2013. The version with the first morning sip of coffee became recognizable. The image appeared in themed collections in the mid-2010s, and in summer 2018 it got a new wave of Russian-language captions. This is a sequence of how the reaction spread, not proof that the earliest macro found was created by its author.

Closed eyes allowed the meaning to change without complicated editing. Pensiveness is easily read as concentration on a pleasant sensation; a slightly raised face as an attempt to breathe in a scent more deeply. The joke needs no objects in hand. The reader supplies the smell or sensation from the caption, turning a still portrait into a brief scene of enjoyment.

What Yoda specifically adds

The photo shows the head, large ears, and the top of the master's light clothing. The eyes are closed, the mouth shut, the face turned slightly up; the background is light and free of distracting details. A part of a raised hand falls at the bottom. This is a calm reaction, so it conveys quiet pleasure better than loud jubilation or sudden success.

The image of a wise mentor magnifies the scale of everyday joy. A person from whom one expects talk of the Force suddenly seems to be appraising the smell of baking. A caption with a characteristic word order is possible, but recognition does not require copying the character's speech. The main contrast already exists between his lofty role in the saga and the small pleasure for which he closes his eyes.

Invented little discoveries

The invented example 'When I came out of the metro and there's a bakery right there' links the raised face to a sudden aroma. The image expresses a pause: the hero isn't buying bread yet, just enjoying the encounter. Another variant: 'The neighbors stopped drilling right when you lay down to rest.' Here the source of pleasure is not a smell but silence; closed eyes suit relief.

Third caption: 'Opened the closet and found a scarf smelling of last vacation.' It moves the reaction into the realm of memory: a small object evokes a whole pleasant recollection. Such storylines keep the slow rhythm of the photo. If the caption immediately lists several smells, places and events, the short moment of recognition that makes Yoda's calm face work as a standalone answer disappears.
