Typical PE Teacher

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Typical PE Teacher

What this meme means

The “Typical PE Teacher” (Russian: “fizruk,” slang for a school PE teacher) meme series grew out of an English-language Reddit starter pack for gym teachers from 2018. It depicts a boastful mentor who clearly doesn't keep up his own fitness. The illustration on this particular entry, however, has no direct connection to the topic: it shows just a figure of Jabba the Hutt in front of a mirror.

Gym teacher starter pack

On September 5, 2018, a Reddit user under the handle FredChocoBear posted a meme in the “starter pack” format, a collection of a character's typical attributes. The kit for a middle or high school PE teacher included a bald head, a noticeable belly, a whistle around the neck, sunglasses even on overcast days, and a clear mismatch between the fitness demands placed on students and the teacher's own appearance.

Format development in 2019

On August 5, 2019, another Reddit user, ChanThe_Man, developed the idea. He posted a meme with a typical PE-teacher line, “I don't see you running!”, next to the character Heavy from the video game Team Fortress 2, a bald, heavyset man who visually resembles the stereotypical gym teacher. The post gathered over a thousand upvotes and sparked a wave of similar memes from other users.

Spread to social networks and the Runet

The trend quickly spread beyond Reddit to other social networks, including VKontakte (a Russian social network) public pages. In the Russian-speaking segment the format caught on as a recognizable series of pictures mocking the typical lines and behavior of school PE teachers: rough nagging, demands to “run faster,” and a demonstrative pride in their own sports form that in reality is most often far from ideal.

A mismatch between this illustration and the topic

The meme's gallery on themed sites includes about eight images, and not all of them directly illustrate the topic of the school PE teacher. The image attached to this particular entry shows not a person or a stereotypical teacher, but a tabletop collectible figure of Jabba the Hutt, a character from the “Star Wars” saga, set up next to a mirror in which its reflected rear is visible.

No direct link between this specific shot and the “typical PE teacher” theme can be established. Most likely it is one of the humorous or simply mistakenly selected items in the meme's general gallery, not an original illustration of the story of its origin. It is therefore best treated as an isolated example from the collection rather than a typical frame of the format.

Meaning and typical captions

Overall the meme works as a collective memory of school years. It recalls an adult who demands athletic achievements from children while himself demonstrating the opposite. Typical captions in the series go along the lines of “PE teacher: you must be in shape; also a PE teacher, opening a bag of chips at recess,” or “he yelled at us to run faster while he was resting by the bleachers,” playing on the contrast between the character's words and his real behavior.

Why the format was recognizable

The meme's strength lies in not relying on a specific person but on a collective school experience. Almost everyone had a gym teacher with a similar set of traits as a child, so the joke reads instantly without additional explanation. That is why the format took off so easily beyond Reddit and quickly adapted to local realities in different countries, including Russian-speaking public pages, where its own variations with recognizable lines of school PE teachers appeared.

It is important to understand, however, that the series remains a composite image rather than a portrait of a specific teacher. The meme satirizes a type and characteristic behavior familiar from many people's personal experience, rather than humiliating any one person by name.
