VK Dark Theme Parodies

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

VK Dark Theme Parodies

What this meme means

A stylized picture with the VKontakte logo in a neon cosmic design: this is how the parody “new themes,” such as lunar or pink, looked. The joke grew out of the real launch of a dark theme in the Android app in April 2019.

What is drawn

In the center is a light-blue rounded square with the “VK” logo; the letters are filled with a lilac texture resembling marble or branches in haze. Around the logo runs a glowing blue ring, like a planet’s, and sparkle-like highlights flash near the top edge. The background consists of purple fibrous strokes fading into dark magenta.

This is stylized graphics, not a screenshot of the app. No interface elements are shown here, so the picture works as a poster of a “new theme” rather than as instructions.

What happened in April 2019

In April 2019, VKontakte released a dark design theme for its official Android app. To get access, one had to update the app and leave a comment with the phrase “Dark theme” under any post. After that a notification arrived, and later the theme could be turned on and off in the settings.

This method made the feature resemble a secret password: you had to know the word and say it publicly. It was exactly this game of secrecy that became the soil for the parodies.

Where the invented themes came from

After the dark theme launched, communities began talking about other variants, most often pink and lunar. No official themes with such names appeared. Pictures with the logo on a fairy-tale background were made by users themselves, and posts promising a “secret theme” gathered comments and subscribers.

The parodies repeat the logic of the original hype: there is a secret, a way to unlock it, and a picture that promises a result. The joke relies on the reader’s memory of the time when a dark theme seemed like an event.

Caption examples and their logic

“Opened settings, and there’s the lunar theme. You can’t select it, but it shines beautifully.” The caption uses the contrast between the promise and an empty menu item: the theme exists only in the picture.

“The dark theme unlocks if you write “dark theme” under grandma’s post.” The secret formula is moved into an everyday situation. The comedy is that the condition sounds absurd but feels familiar.

“The pink theme turns on after a hundred thousand comments.” The hyperbole stretches the real story: the actual theme needed a single phrase, while the invented one demands a feat.

“Updated the app and spent three hours looking for the lunar theme in the friends list.” The caption shifts the setting: instead of the menu, it is the contact list. The joke holds on absurd confidence.

How to use this template

The picture suits posts about imaginary updates, secret features or collective misconceptions. It also works in replies to other people’s messages when the conversation already revolves around the design.

Without knowing April 2019, the joke loses part of its meaning. For a fresh audience, it is worth adding a short explanation, otherwise the sense of secrecy will not come through.

A good device is to add plausible but absurd conditions for unlocking the “secret theme”: a number of reposts, a special word, a time of day. The more serious the rules sound, the funnier the result.

Do not present such a picture as a real promise of a new feature: the joke works as long as the reader understands the theme is made up. If the caption reads like an advertising announcement, the parody turns into plain deception.
