What the photograph shows

Where the photos came from
The photo shows actor Timothée Chalamet and actress Lily-Rose Depp. According to press reports, the photos were taken in September 2019 during a boat outing off the coast of Italy, and they spread quickly online. They were shot from a distance, without the subjects’ knowledge.
In November 2019, in an interview with GQ magazine, Chalamet said that he went to bed that evening thinking the day had been one of the best of his life, and in the morning, upon seeing the publications, he felt awkward. He also rejected the version that the publication was a publicity stunt. This is the only verified statement by the subject about these pictures, and it does not feature in the memes: the jokes are built solely on the image itself.
Why the photo became a template
The meme reads instantly because there is no complicated situation in it: two people, one reaching toward the other. The emotion is exaggerated by the pose itself, so the picture works very well for hyperbole. The caption names the object of attachment, and the contrast between the “lofty” romantic image and the mundane object creates the humor.
Another advantage is the versatility of the roles. Either of the two participants can stand for the person, and the other for the desired thing, so the template fits jokes about food, sleep, vacations, and new gadgets.

How to use the template and what to avoid
The caption should set two roles: who is reaching and toward what. If both sides are not labeled, the picture turns into an ordinary photo. It is best to choose objects toward which the attachment is comical: food, sleep, gadgets.
Do not use the meme as a joke about the real relationship of these people or about other acquaintances. The photo was taken without the subjects’ consent, and information about their personal lives is incomplete and not relevant to the point of the joke.
