The start-of-round screen

The image has a black background and large turquoise pixel letters reading "Crewmate", meaning "crew member". Below, in white text: "There is 1 Impostor among us", with the word Impostor highlighted in red. Along the bottom, colorful astronauts are arranged in an arc: pink, white, blue, brown, black, red, green, yellow and purple. Some wear hats and accessories: a peaked cap, a police hat, a head mirror, horns.

This is the screen players see at the start of a round. For an ordinary crew member it says: "you're one of the crew, but there's an impostor among you." This screen became one of the game's main visual symbols.

The history of the game

Among Us was made by the studio Innersloth. The game came out on mobile in June 2018, and a Windows version followed in November of that year. For a long time it stayed little known. A marked surge of interest came in mid-2020, when popular streamers began to play it; overviews of the trend name Sodapoppin among the first. The pandemic also played a role: the game let people socialize at a distance.

In later versions a match has between four and fifteen players, and there are several maps.

How it is played and what makes it funny

Crewmates complete tasks on a spaceship. Among them are one or more impostors who eliminate the others and sabotage systems. Any player can call a meeting, discuss suspicions and vote on who to eject into space.

Three things matter for memes. First: suspicions are often baseless, and everyone defends themselves with absurd excuses. Second: the word "sus", short for "suspicious", has spread beyond the game and entered everyday speech. Third: the little astronaut is easy to draw, so a huge amount of fan art has appeared.

Caption examples

"There's an impostor among us. I suspect whoever left the kitchen last and never brought the tea." A household situation turns into an investigation.

"The red one is sus: he stayed silent while everyone argued." The caption flips the logic: silence counts as evidence.

"I'm not the impostor, I was just in the vents on business." The absurd excuse gets a laugh from people who know the game.

"When the group chat says 'emergency meeting' and you were just sitting there with the trash." It shows an innocent person frantically making excuses.

How to use the image

This frame works well as a title card for a joke about suspicion in a team, a family or a class. It works best when the caption is about a small everyday "betrayal": who ate the last candy, who left the lights on. Knowing the game is not required, but jokes using terms like "meeting" and "sus" land better with players.

Don't pin betrayal on real people in earnest: the joke works only while the accusation is clearly playful.

Why the meme outlived the trend

Interest peaked in 2020, but the format stayed in use: the word "sus" and the astronaut image have long since spread beyond the game. The reason is simple: the rules are recognizable without explanation. There is a group, someone who lies, and a general meeting where everyone suspects everyone. That setup fits any group, which is why the jokes moved into offices, schools and family chats.
