Sans / Megalovania

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Sans / Megalovania

What this meme means

Sans and Megalovania are a pairing from Undertale in which a grinning skeleton signals an unexpectedly tough opponent, and a recognizable melody promises a tense fight. Memes carry this gaming contrast over into ordinary situations and turn the music into a standalone joke.

A skeleton that seems harmless for a long time

Sans is a character from Toby Fox’s game Undertale, released in September 2015. He is Papyrus’s brother, loves puns, and at first greets the protagonist with easygoing jokes. His wide grin and relaxed manner bear little resemblance to the usual image of a fearsome final boss.

On the route where the player systematically destroys the monsters they encounter, Sans becomes the last boss. The change of role gives his calm a different meaning. The familiar character already knows enough about the hero’s actions and warns of the consequences. The line about “bad time” became part of the meme image: a gentle start to a conversation can turn into a trial the other person is not ready for.

The melody had a life before Undertale

Megalovania was written by Toby Fox. An early version was heard in his EarthBound Halloween Hack from 2008. The piece then appeared in the music for the webcomic Homestuck: the album Homestuck Vol. 6: Heir Transparent, which includes MeGaLoVania, was released on January 5, 2011. That is why the track’s history cannot begin with Sans’s appearance.

The Undertale soundtrack came out on September 15, 2015. In the game, Megalovania accompanies the fight with Sans on the corresponding route. The repeating motif is easy to recognize from its first few notes, and the fast tempo sustains a sense of danger. For a fan, the melody evokes a specific memory of that fight; in a new joke, this hint is enough to make an everyday episode feel like a boss encounter.

Covers, mashups and the appearance in Smash

After Undertale’s release, metal and comedic instrumental versions appeared, as well as mashups of Megalovania with other songs. In autumn 2015, notable examples included a metal cover by RichaadEB and a kazoo version by Tsuko G. Changing the instruments changed the mood while keeping the recognizable melodic base.

On September 5, 2019, a Sans mask and costume for the Mii Gunner were released for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, together with a special Megalovania remix. This is a costume for an existing fighter type, not a separate full-fledged character on the roster. In this way, the game reference received an official version outside Undertale, although the meme images and musical reworkings had long existed independently.

What the black-and-white sprite conveys

In this picture, Sans is shown as a pixel skeleton with a wide grin, wearing a jacket, with his arms spread out. The image is black and white and tilted against a black background. There is no blue glow in the eye, which appears in other versions, and there is no sound: the viewer restores the connection to Megalovania through the familiar character and the caption.

Such a sprite suits the sudden appearance of the hero in an unsuitable setting. Sans can signal a hidden threat or simply be an absurd guest inserted into someone else’s story. The musical meme works a little differently: the melody is picked up by an unexpected instrument, a household noise or an entirely different song. The joke lands when the listener recognizes the motif where they did not expect to hear it.

Examples without retelling the playthrough

The new caption “When the easy side quest turned out to be the final boss” uses the contrast between Sans’s calm appearance and the difficulty of the encounter. The variant “Me: let me quickly fix one bug. Code:” turns the character into an embodiment of an unexpected ordeal rather than a literal participant in a work conversation.

For the musical version, one can imagine a kettle that, with a few whistles, recalls the start of Megalovania: “The kitchen has entered the genocide route.” This is an invented example of a game reference. It relies on recognizing the motif, whereas the picture with Sans can work without it. In this way, the shared story keeps two entry points: a familiar hero for the viewer and familiar notes for the listener.
