What's visible in the image

The picture contains two collages in one frame. On the left is a selfie: a young woman with a short bob haircut, dark chestnut with a blue sheen, big blue eyes, a light smile, and a piercing in her ear. The word "Galaxy" is visible on the chest of her black shirt. On the right, the same character sits on a white cube in blue pants and a black shirt, resting her cheek on her hand and holding up a smartphone with a shimmering purple-pink pattern. The background is light blue.

This is 3D graphics, not a photo of a real person. The style resembles a blend of anime and modern computer animation.

How the character came about

The character wasn't invented at the company's headquarters. According to an account of her history, she's the joint work of Lightfarm, a Brazilian visual production studio, and Cheil Worldwide, an advertising agency within Samsung's orbit. The studio separately highlighted the detailed work on her hair and clothing textures.

The first images appeared on the studio's website and social media in May 2021, along with a short test video. Some of the posts were later taken down. The wave of interest began on May 29, 2021, when Twitter user @JanaiArts posted four images of the character, and the post racked up tens of thousands of likes within days.

In June 2021, the company itself clarified in a comment to a Korean outlet that Sam is a virtual trainer used to train staff at stores in its Brazilian division, not a voice assistant replacing Bixby, as foreign media had assumed. The same comment stated the character had been in use since 2020. There was no separate official announcement naming her a brand symbol. So it's more accurate to think of Sam as a working image meant for staff training that happened to escape the bounds of an internal project and took on a life of its own.

How she was received

Foreign outlets initially called her Samsung's new assistant, and the name "Sam" stuck online. The character quickly became a subject of fan art: people drew her in various styles, compared her to other video game heroines, and social media filled up with countless jokey messages addressed to her. Some of that content is explicitly adult and isn't covered in this article; the focus here is the meme concept itself.

The joke rests on absurdity: a fictional ad character became an object of devotion. People mockingly beg the character's forgiveness for not owning a Galaxy, or swear they'll buy the phone just to have her nearby.

Example captions

Captions for this shot. "I'm not upgrading my phone. But she shows me the screen — and I'm already at the store" — marketing that worked too well; the funny part is the viewer's own admission.

"Service center: no, the battery isn't dead. I just came to look" — an exaggerated excuse for a visit.

"Tech support promised to reply within five business days. Sam: already typing" — the contrast between ordinary customer service and an idealized image.

"Bought the Galaxy for the camera. Stayed for the selfies" — a play on words about the real deciding factor.

How to use it

The selfie on the left suits "look what I found" reactions; the pose on the right with the phone suits conversations about gadgets and purchases. Jokes about everyday devices work better than personal remarks about her looks. Keep in mind that this is a made-up character created for advertising training, not a real employee.
