What the picture shows
A photo shot from above of a stainless steel saucepan on a stove. In the pot is white milk with foam. On the surface is a chocolate gorilla silhouette: a head with clear features, a shoulder and one long arm. Nearby, a detached hand floats separately, and another piece is visible by the right wall. The figure is reddish-brown and glossy, already softening in places.
This is a single photo, not a series of frames. The sense of process comes from the pose: the gorilla seems to peer out of the milk and desperately hold on.
Where the photo comes from
According to meme databases, the photo was first posted by an Imgur user in October 2017 under the title “I’ll be back,” and it collected hundreds of thousands of views. The figurine is named “Zoology Chocolate Gorilla” from the Sugoi Mart shop, but the exact model is not legible in the picture itself, so this should be treated as information from online accounts.
The first known meme use was found just three days later, in an accountants’ community on Reddit with a caption about the busy season. In August 2020 the image began to be inserted into a multi-panel format in which a character tries to say something important while disappearing.
What the melting gorilla means
The metaphor needs no words: chocolate in hot milk loses its shape, and this cannot be stopped. The title of the photo adds extra comedy: a line from a movie about a cyborg promising a return, while the figurine melts before our eyes.
The gorilla also looks like a strong animal, and it is its helplessness that is funny. The stronger the force in the picture, the funnier and sadder the slow loss.
Interestingly, the title “I’ll be back” works as a mini-plot. From it, it is clear that the hero does not give up, but melts before our eyes, so the picture reads at once as tragicomedy. Without the title the meme still works, but it becomes more abstract.
Example captions
“Me by Friday evening.” The caption brings back a familiar work rhythm: by the end of the week the energy is gone.
“My budget on payday, an hour after payday.” The joke rests on speed: there was plenty of resource, and only a hand is left above the surface.
“New Year’s diet, January 12th.” Here the gorilla stands for determination, and the milk for everything else sitting in the kitchen.
“Me when I try to explain that I need five more minutes.” The figurine is sinking but keeps talking: this conveys stubbornness in a hopeless situation.
All these examples share one principle: first you need a compact, recognizable situation, and then its consequences are visible at once, without explanation.
How to use the template
Caption not the gorilla itself, but what is being destroyed: energy, plans, patience. One line is enough. Everyday occasions with a clear deadline work best: the end of the day, the week, or the month.
Avoid captions about real people and their appearance: the image is built on a metaphor, not on humiliating a specific person.
You can also play with scale: jokes about the global and the minor sound the same. “My energy by the end of the quarter” and “my feelings about potatoes for dinner” work on the same image, and the choice depends on what you want to emphasize: fatigue or mild despair.
