A stare from the dim room
The close-up shows the head of a chimpanzee: dark fur, a pale beard and sideburns, brown eyes, and the corners of the mouth slightly lifted. He fills almost the whole frame. Behind him are a light wall, a framed picture at the upper right and a dark armchair on the left. The name “monkey without ears” comes from the fact that no ears are visible: they are hidden in the fur, and the whole face seems to be looking out at the viewer.
The expression stays enigmatic. It can be read as calm curiosity, polite bewilderment or cool indifference, and the meme depends on this ambiguity.
Where the monkey came from: what is known
The exact origin of the photo is unknown. One of the earliest posts found is on a Russian imageboard, dated September 9, 2020. In October 2020 the picture entered Spanish-speaking circles, where it was nicknamed Mauro and treated as a sequel to a meme with a horse named Juan. A Reddit user posted it on October 7, 2020.
In Russian-speaking social networks it has appeared since December 2020, and in early 2021 it was widely used as avatars on VKontakte. Peak popularity, by estimates, came in April 2021. Who photographed the animal, where and when is not established. It is also unknown whether this is a genuine photo of a monkey at a desk.
Two faces of one chimp
Besides the original photo, a distorted version circulates: the image is stretched or degraded and the word “Fine” is added. This is an example of post-irony: the meme deliberately means nothing, and the absurdity is amplified by the low quality. Details of the first distorted variant are not known.
So the “monkey without ears” lives in two modes: a serious stare, and a routine “fine” in reply to things nobody has the energy to discuss anymore.
Captions about loneliness and fatigue
Example: “When on day three of online dating you've covered everything except what you're actually looking for.” The monkey's stare emphasizes the pause after an awkward line.
Example: “Replying to ‘we need to talk’ on a Friday evening.” The face is tensely calm, like someone already expecting the worst.
Example: “Me when friends discuss where to go on vacation, and I have five days and two rubles.” The contrast in the caption and the slightly smiling face creates gentle self-irony.
Example with “Fine”: “Exchange rates for the week. Fine.” The short word on the distorted picture reads like surrender to circumstances.
Practical notes
The photo suits short captions: the background is an ordinary room, so text can go at the top or bottom. The caption should read either as the animal's own thought or as the viewer's reaction.
Do not present the picture as a shot of a specific zoo or a named animal. It is only known that Spanish-speaking audiences call it Mauro.
The contrast with text works well: the more official and dull the caption, the funnier the calm face. For example, a line about quarterly results or new parking rules. For an avatar, the full frame works: the face is centered and readable even at a small size, which is exactly why it spread in early 2021.
