What the picture shows
A close-up: the head of a shiba inu with reddish-white fur and a slightly sad, calm gaze is set directly onto a torso. The body is dressed in a dark green, almost black zip-up tracksuit jacket and matching trousers. Three light stripes run down the sleeves and trouser legs, and small badges in the style of a well-known sportswear brand are visible on the chest and hip. The hands are in the pockets, and the whole figure is slightly squat and square.
The background is a gray garage door with panels. This is a deliberately absurd collage: the seam is visible along the neck, and it is precisely this seam that makes the picture funny.
Whose head it is
The dog in the memes is known as Cheems. According to English-language sources, it is a shiba inu named Balltze from Hong Kong, who lived from 2011 to 2023. The photo that became the basis of the meme was taken around 2017, while real fame came after 2019 and especially in the summer of 2020. The format “Swole Doge vs. Cheems” and the habit of adding the letter “m” to words became famous.
The collage with a body in a tracksuit is one of many montages with this dog's face. Who put it together and when is not known for certain, and accounts differ. It is more accurate to say only that the joke gained popularity in 2020 along with the general rise of interest in Cheems.
The stereotype the joke relies on
In the West there is a long-standing playful image of the “Slav” or “Russian”: a man crouching in a tracksuit, cracking sunflower seeds and listening to hard music. Its roots lie in the image of the urban gopnik (a Russian street tough) of the 1990s and 2000s. The picture does not describe real people; it repeats a cliché, and it is perceived differently: some see friendly irony, others a superficial caricature.
For a Russian-speaking viewer the joke is double. They see both the Western gaze and their own familiar aesthetic of the neighborhood, where tracksuits were ordinary clothing, and so they often answer it with self-deprecating captions of their own.
Why the meme caught on
The dog himself helps. In other memes Cheems is portrayed as weak, soft and somewhat unhappy, but here he suddenly plays at toughness. The mismatch between the good-natured gaze and the “menacing” outfit is funny in itself.
Besides, the picture is easy to caption: it suits any plot with a deliberately gopnik tone. That is why the meme quickly moved into general template collections.
Caption examples
“Quietly crouched down by the building entrance.” The caption simply names the pose, but thanks to the cute face the result comes out good-natured.
“Cheems when asked to turn the volume down.” The contrast matters here: the outfit promises threat, while the reason is a modest request.
“Me at a class reunion, about twenty years ago.” A joke about how a person has grown up but kept the same image.
“It started raining, and I'm in my three stripes, so I'm not scared.” The branded outfit takes on the role of armor. Each caption rests on a mismatch between the outward “tough” look and a small, gentle reason.
Tips for use
The picture works best in self-ironic scenarios: captioning yourself, your friends or your own habits. If you refer to national stereotypes directly, the joke easily becomes offensive, so it is wiser to focus on everyday details: the tracksuit, the crouching, the building entrance.
The collage itself shows neither the crouching pose nor sunflower seeds: the dog stands with his hands in his pockets. So captions that describe exactly “standing and looking” fit most accurately.
