What is known about the origin of the photo

The caption names the person in the frame as Elon Musk, and that is how the meme is usually understood. According to published reports, the photo dates to the early years of SpaceX, around 2002, and Musk later himself used it in a post about how few people the company had at the start. The place and occasion of the shoot, as well as who first posted the photo online, are not reliably established.

The description “corporate photo” is not confirmed; it is more accurate to speak of a photo of a festive moment, with the year taken from the reports. These details are unlikely to change the meaning of the meme, since the template rests on the scene itself.

Why the maraca dance is funny

The joke rests on the contrast between the empty room and the cheerful scene. The musicians play, one man claps, and the man in the center celebrates without any reason and without embarrassment. The viewer only has to see the raised maraca to imagine any small celebration.

This photo should not be confused with another story: in January 2020, at the Tesla factory in Shanghai, Musk danced on stage, and video of that spread separately. That is different material, although captions sometimes mix up the images.
