Launch and the first frame
On February 6, 2018, a Falcon Heavy rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral. Mounted on its upper stage was a Tesla Roadster electric car, with a mannequin in a white spacesuit at the wheel. The company named him Starman. The broadcast played David Bowie’s song “Space Oddity,” which added a recognizable cultural reference to the launch. The mission sent the car into a heliocentric orbit, meaning a path around the Sun rather than an orbit around Earth.
A photo showing the Roadster against the blue surface of Earth and the dark sky was published by SpaceX and spread widely. The shot shows the car’s red body panel and part of a wheel, with the curve of the planet in the background. This high-contrast composition is exactly what made the frame easy to remix.
How the photo became a meme
In the first days after the launch, the image spread across social media, news sites and fan communities. Russian outlets, including Meduza, N+1 and RIA Novosti, ran stories with details about the trajectory and the car itself, and later reports appeared saying that Elon Musk had posted a final photo of the car on its way toward the orbit of Mars. This level of interest quickly turned the frame into a magnet for jokes.
Photoshopped versions appeared almost immediately. The car was moved to other locations, characters from films and cartoons were added beside it, and it was placed into city landscapes. One popular version, which appears in the catalog now, added a cartoon figure sitting on board the car. The author of this particular edit has not been established in open sources.
Types of photoshops
Most of the remixes follow one pattern: the template “Tesla in …” gets an unexpected place or situation inserted. The most common are everyday scenes that contrast with the space aesthetic. For example: “Tesla in space, and me in line at the government services office with ticket number forty-seven.” Or another version: “Tesla in orbit around the Sun, and my kettle still hasn’t boiled.” These captions work through a comparison of scale: a huge technological project set against a small everyday annoyance.
A separate group consists of parodies of well-known images. The Roadster was placed next to iconic posters, inserted into scenes from science fiction films, and even put on the covers of imaginary magazines. These remixes often rely on the recognizable contrast between dark space and the bright red car.
Why the meme took off
The main reason for its popularity is the combination of a real event with an absurd visual. Launching a car into space looked like a joke that had been organized in all seriousness, and this gave the meme a ready-made frame. The image was also understandable without explanation: seeing the car against the Earth is enough to grasp what happened.
The figure of Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, also played an important role. Some users saw the launch as an example of engineering boldness, others as a publicity stunt, so the meme easily picked up irony in both directions. This ambiguity made it possible to use the image in both enthusiastic and sarcastic captions without changing the picture itself.
The car’s fate
According to publications from recent years, the Roadster and the mannequin continue moving along a heliocentric orbit and will not return to Earth. These details rest on trajectory calculations cited in materials marking the fifth anniversary of the launch. The car’s exact position at any given moment depends on the model and its initial parameters, so claims about it should be treated as approximate.
The photo itself continues to live on the internet as a symbol of the combination of technology, media boldness and self-irony. The meme shows how a real event captured in a single photograph can become a template for thousands of jokes without losing its original image.
