The Four Generations Challenge

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

The Four Generations Challenge

What this meme means

“The Four Generations Challenge” was a family video challenge from early 2019 in which relatives from several generations take part, from the youngest to the oldest. It spread from the Chinese short-video service Douyin. The image shows two laughing women in a room: they evoke the format, but do not show all four generations themselves.

What is visible in the image

The frame shows two women in a room. On the left, a woman in a light double-breasted coat with dark buttons; on the right, a woman in a red quilted jacket and dark trousers. Both are broadly smiling or laughing, and the one on the left reaches a hand toward the one on the right, as if inviting her into a shared movement. Behind them stands a cabinet with wooden shelves, on which framed photos and small souvenirs are visible.

A pink edge is visible at the right side of the frame that has nothing to do with the scene. The important point is that the image does not show four generations: only a pair of participants is visible, and from a single frame one cannot tell either their ages or whether they are related.

Where the challenge came from

Reportedly, the challenge began on Douyin, the Chinese short-video service, in early 2019. The idea follows from the name: in one video, family members from several generations gather and repeat a shared action. The specifics varied from video to video, so a single reliable description of the scenario is not possible.

The author of the first video is not known. What is reliably known is only the time of spread and that the format was family-oriented, warm, and designed to be repeated, which made it easy to pick up outside China as well.

Why these videos catch on

The format’s strength lies in its recognizable structure. The viewer knows roughly what will come next and follows the details: how each person holds themselves, who laughs first, who gets tangled up. Each new generation adds its own manner to the video, and this works like a mini-portrait of the family.

The second strength is warmth. The videos show the family as a team, where everyone is together and everyone has their place. That is why they are often forwarded to relatives and watched together.

Sample captions for a family frame

Below are invented captions. They fit when you want a joke about family and generations, rather than about the specific people in the frame.

“When grandma said ‘I did the same thing at your age,’ and here we all are.” The caption turns the repetition into a family tradition.

“I called Mom, Mom called Grandma, and Grandma asked why we have so many guests.” The example builds on an unexpected line from the last person in the chain.

“When a family has no group chat, but has four generations ready for a photo.” The joke works through the contrast between modern fashion and a domestic scene.

“Each new generation adds one more move to the dance that nobody asked for.” Here the ‘family as a chain’ plot turns into harmless irony about continuity.

How to use this frame

The picture is handy for posts about family gatherings, holidays, shared activities, and how different generations have fun together. The caption should say outright that this is about a family challenge, otherwise a frame with two women looks random.

Don’t invent family ties, their history, or relationships between the people in this frame. If you need a family story, it is better to describe your own: the caption author decides what to share.
