Water Sheep

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Water Sheep

What this meme means

Water Sheep is an NPC sheep (a non-player character) from PewDiePie’s single-player Minecraft let’s play series, which the blogger in one episode confesses tender feelings to and in the next pointedly rejects. The contrast between the two lines turned an ordinary in-game moment into a template for jokes about a sudden change of attitude.

Where the sheep came from

The character appeared in one episode of a long let’s play series by Swedish blogger PewDiePie (Felix Kjellberg) titled “MINECRAFT EPIC,” which he ran in 2019. In the storyline of his videos, the host built a farm and kept several animals in his care, including a sheep, which he addressed with playful tenderness.

In one episode, approaching the sheep at night, the blogger says “baby, you can come sleep with me tonight :)”, a mock-tender invitation addressed to an in-game mob. The frame with this line became the first half of the future meme.

Contrast and turn

Later, in another segment of the same let’s play, the same character addresses the sheep in a pointedly cold tone: “you’re nothing to me!” It is this sharp juxtaposition of two lines, cut from different moments of the video and edited back to back, that became the basis of the meme: one and the same person first shows warm feelings and then in an instant disowns them.

Viewers and clip editors quickly noticed the comic potential of this pair of frames and began sharing the screenshot with the two lines as a standalone joke, detached from the original game context.

Why the template took hold

The “tenderness first, cold rejection after” format is universal: it works for describing people’s fickleness, abrupt mood swings, unmet expectations in relationships, or simply irony at one’s own inconsistency. Two frames from Minecraft became a convenient in-game shorthand for such observations, since they need no explanation: the chain “confession, then rejection” reads instantly.

The meme’s recognizability was also boosted by PewDiePie himself: by 2019 he was one of the most popular gaming bloggers on YouTube, and his videos regularly became a source of new internet jokes.

How the meme is used

The image is most often posted unchanged, with context added in the caption of the post, or the text above the frames is edited to fit a specific situation. Typical captions look like: “when a friend asks to borrow money / when the friend pays it back half a year later” or “me at the start of the coursework / me the day after the deadline.” The meaning always rests on a sudden change of attitude toward the same object.

The format is also used without reference to the original lines, keeping only the structure “first tenderly, then abruptly,” which suggests the template is now perceived more as a universal constructor than as a quote from a specific video.

Place in the meme culture of 2019

Water Sheep belongs in the same group as other memes that grew out of ordinary let’s play moments, when a line or scene torn from its context acquires a life of its own as a template. For PewDiePie’s audience it is also a recognizable reference to a specific episode of the Minecraft series, while for other users it is simply a handy template about duplicity or mood swings.

Memes built on splicing two disconnected lines from the same streamer were especially typical of 2019, when clips and compilations of multi-hour let’s plays were actively used by the community as a source of new templates. Viewers rewatched each “MINECRAFT EPIC” episode separately in search of such striking contrasting moments.
