PMC Redan

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

PMC Redan

What this meme means

“Redan” is a teenage anime community that drew wide attention in Russia in February 2023 after conflicts and alarming reports of mass brawls. The word “PMC” and generalizations in headlines do not describe an official military organization or all members of the community.

What the image shows

The local picture shows several young people standing with their backs to the camera in dark hoodies with a white spider design; a figure 4 is noticeable nearby. Checked trousers and long dark hair repeat the visual signs that the media and users linked to the community’s style. But clothing cannot reveal the views or behavior of a particular teenager.

The name “PMC Redan” is an internet label that does not mean a private military company exists. The community is inspired by Japanese manga and street fashion; in February 2023 it found itself in the spotlight after clashes in shopping centers and rumours of new conflicts. Coverage from that time distinguished between anime fans and individual participants in the clashes, although viral messages often blended them.

Context of the 2023 events

Public interest grew quickly after reports of brawls between teenage groups in large cities. Law enforcement investigated individual incidents, and news outlets tried to establish how a local subculture had become a national topic. Early accounts of the causes of the clashes varied: eyewitnesses described disputes over appearance and provocations, official statements recorded specific cases, and the internet added unconfirmed warnings.

Such inconsistency calls for caution: one cannot declare every person with a spider on their clothing a participant in a brawl, or say that the entire subculture opposed any nationality. The very formula “PMC” contains ironic hyperbole. Using it without explanation in an article about teenagers may create a false impression of an armed structure.

How the meme uses the insignia

The white spider on the hoodie and the number “4” became the community’s visual marker, so they were easily recognized in news reports, collages, and parodies. Memes played on the difference between the everyday clothing of anime fans and the serious military abbreviation in the name. Some mocked the excessive anxiety of adults, others the very habit of describing school groups as an organized threat.

The symbolism existed before the surge of news coverage, but the public fame of this particular group and the spread of its name came in 2023. Not everyone wearing similar hoodies belonged to one community, and a photo reposted many times does not necessarily show a real event. Check the caption on each image separately before naming a place, participants, and circumstances.

Examples and responsible use

A neutral joke about style might read: “We got together to discuss the new manga arc — we picked the dress code in advance.” Here what is funny is not violence but a unified visual image. For a conversation about the news, it is better to write: “How quickly clothing from a local scene became a national news story” and attach a verified report with specific context.

Do not use the template to harass teenagers, publish personal data, or make accusations based on a single hoodie. In educational material it is useful to distinguish the community, its symbols, individual conflicts, and the media reaction. This approach explains why the name became a meme without presenting rumours of supposedly widespread brawls as established fact.

For a historical account, it is worth separating the self-organization of anime fans from the reaction to particular cases of violence. News reports of the time recorded real investigations, but at the same time noted a wave of unconfirmed warnings about future clashes. Memes could amplify both anxiety and mockery of that anxiety; neither reaction describes every teenager.
