An amateur film instead of a show episode
In May 2018 a short clip, It's Not Easy Being Green, created by the Meme Insider team, appeared. It used a Kermit plush, and the fall down the stairwell was part of an unsettling dream: then the hero woke up. This is an independent work with a well-known character, so the scene cannot be tied to a specific episode of the official puppet show.
The video was published on May 15. Almost immediately the frame began to be discussed in the MemeEconomy community on Reddit as a potential new template. In macros Kermit was designated as the author himself, and the dark depth as an activity into which he is about to sink. The dream from the short film proved convenient for a completely different narrative: the frozen picture no longer showed the awakening and left the character in endless motion toward an unknown result.
A staircase with no visible end
On the right of the frame is a blurred green toy with long outstretched limbs. Behind and to the left, the light railings of a rectangular stairwell repeat. They descend toward a darkened center. The image is yellowish and out of focus, as if caught in motion. There are no captions, no people below, and no moment of impact here: it shows the flight itself, not its outcome.
The geometry of the staircase creates a sense of depth better than any explanation. The repeating frames make the eye move exactly where Kermit is flying. The toy occupies the nearest plane, while the end of the path remains distant and barely distinguishable. Therefore the picture expresses not just a fall but a passage into a large unknown space. The blurred limbs strengthen the impression that the decision has already been made and that the motion cannot be stopped within this single frame.
How a minute becomes an abyss
In meme captions, physical distance stands in for the cost of attention. A person thinks they will only check one fact or watch a short demonstration, then discovers an entire chain of related topics. Kermit represents this moment of leaving the surface: an ordinary evening begins to vanish somewhere beyond the railings while the new hobby takes up more and more space.
The format can also convey a willingness to get into a plainly absurd undertaking. The difference lies in the caption: it either makes the abyss appealing or shows that the hero foresaw the consequences. The plush toy softens the literal scene and lets it be read as an absurd exaggeration. Instead of realistic drama, the result is a puppet illustration of an impulse. The facial expression is almost lost in the motion, so the mood is set by the flight itself and the reason chosen for it.
Where this evening flies
In an invented macro, the top reads: “I'll just check why the old clock makes that sound,” and the bottom: “a restorers' forum and a forty-page diagram of the mechanism.” A little curiosity becomes a separate research project. Another variant sends Kermit to “a new hobby with a mandatory purchase of twelve tools,” although the original plan was only to fix one shelf. The difference between the task and the scale of the hobby replaces the height of the staircase.
A third example concerns a game: the hero plans to check the character editor just once, while the abyss stands for meticulously choosing an eyebrow shade until two in the morning. Such a plot is recognizable even without knowing the original video. It preserves the template's key property: too fast a movement from a modest intention to circumstances that already control the person. The frame ends before the result, so the meme easily leaves the rest of the evening to the viewer's imagination.
